I like the novella idea quite a bit. Too bad I won't be able to do it in my current Eberron game - the PCs seem like they'll be making quite the point of staying in the shadows. But I think it could be cool if the head of House Thuranni asks our rogue to train "the next generation" of spies, theives, assassins, and cutthroats.
