I need a better will save SOON!

Drasmir

First Post
As the subject reads, I need a better will save for my character. As it stands, I am a rogue/ftr and therefore have a very low will save which I am realizing very quickly is going to be my Achilles heel. I am looking for multiple ways to increase my will save so all ideas are welcome. What would be the best/most-efficient (in terms of $$$) that you guys have found?

All replies greatly appreciated.:D

If all you need is a better Will save, you might check whether your DM will allow a custom magic item. For a bonus to a single save, the price guideline is (bonus squared x 250 gp). That is, a +2 item would cost 1000 gp, and a +5 item would cost 6250 gp.

If you don't know a friendly spellcaster who could craft that for you, or if your DM does not allow custom items (hi dcollins!), you can shop for a Cloak of Resistance. It gives a bonus to all saves, but is more expensive, at (bonus squared x 1000 gp). At +5 it costs 25,000 gp.

You'd also get some benefit from a Periapt of Wisdom or equivalent. This would be even more expensive-- 36,000 gp will get you a net +3 to your Will save-- but it'll also help with Wisdom-based skills, like Spot and Listen.

In the short term, when fighting enemies who force you to make Will saves, try to get some help from your spellcaster allies. Protection from alignment gives a +2 bonus, and prevents mind control; owl's wisdom increases the relevant ability score; even Resistance can be useful in a pinch.

I'm going to assume that it would be difficult to take another base class, since you've already got two.

Buy a cloak of resistence, luckstone, or like item to boost your saves. This will generally increase all of your saves.

Buy an item that increases your Wisdom.

Make sure that you're not stopping at a bad will save level. You want as many of your levels as possible a multiple of 3 or 6, with 6 being much better since every saving throw goes up at 6.

For example, Rogue2/FIghter 2 is much worse for Will Save the Ro3/Fi1 or R1/F3.

Take Iron Will as a feat. You get enough feats as a fighter, this shouldn't be a horrible sacrifice.

As a high level (10th or more of Rogue), take Slippery Mind. It is one of the Rogue Special feats that you can take, allows you a second saving throw.

Take a PrC that has Will as a good save. For example, the GateCrasher (from Manual of the Planes) is a good Rogue PrC that gives good Reflex and Will saves. This may take the character in unexpected directions, but I though it worth mentioning.

If there are only certain spells that are really a problem, try to get something that just handles that. Ring of Freedom of Movement is the example that comes immediately to my mind.

At epic levels, there is supposed to be some sort of feat that allows you to use your Reflex save for all saving throws. I don't recall the name of it.

Edit: Spelling and name of Ring

It's not to a single save but to a single type of save -- not Fortitude, but Fort saves vs. poison (as in the DMG).

You know, a lot of people think the Iron Will feat is a waste. I think it's an absolute must-have for fighters. I can't count the number of times it's saved my fighter. That extra +2 goes a long way.

Will saves

All of the above (especially the Iron Will feat). I might also recommend raising your Use Magical Device skill high enough to reliably use a wand of owl's wisdom; it'll up your Wis stat by 1d4+1 for 3 hours per charge -- and it's cheaper than 50 scrolls of the same spell.

It's more than one feat. IIRC the one that lets you sub Reflex for Will is called "Dextrous Will." The one for Fort saves is similar.

What level are you, Drasmir?

The 17th-level fighter in one of my campaigns (too many...) has a +2 (or +4?) Wisdom boosting item, a +5 cloak of resistance, Iron Will... and a psionic item that gives you +4 to saves vs mind-affecting effects. At least he didn't also go for the Skin of the Hero, since he can't afford it.

I don't believe the cleric has ever failed a Will save. No matter how high the save DC, he rolls high when needed. Even when I do the rolling...
