I need help getting my artwork in my signature.

I figured out where the proper place to go to start it is, but it still won't save the image I'm trying to use.

The edit avatar browser keeps telling me that my image is too big. I have reduced it to a 20-pixel jpg, and still it says the same thing. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Will someone please help?

Is it a file or a link?

Do you want it in your avatar or signature?

The avatar is the picture under your name, to the left. If you want it in your signature (as you indicated in the title of your thread), you need to go to Edit My Signature (that'd be the space under the actual post, like you can see under mine).

Thank you for responding. :)

I was trying for one under my username--to the left, as you said--and a different one under my signature. I have tried to save each image in a number of sizes, trying to reduce them to the respective 4.9k file size and 96k file size.
Am I reading the file size wrong? It is saying that I have an attached file, so that might be the case, but I'll be damned if I know how to do it any differently. :\
I am not intending to link anything to this site, but to simply save two of my scanned-in drawings onto my avatar and my signature, respectively.
I would be grateful for any assistance. :heh:

Are you sure the pixel size is right? Scanned pictures are often pretty big.

There's a pixel size limit and a file size limit, and you need to be within both.

Try attaching the file to a post on here--if it's too big, I'll try reducing it.

And, so you know, the place for an inquiry like this is Meta. I'm happy to try to help you out over here, but if it's a problem with the system, you need to post over there anyway.

Sorry about the incorrect thread placement, but it is definitely OT, as well as being meta. If the mods want to move me, I have no objections.

Edit: I went back into Photoshop and tried again for the avatar picture. The message I get is that the file I've "tried to attach is too big..." In Photoshop it reads as 35 pixels in one dimension, and ~31 in the other. The actual file size is 4k. It's itty-bitty, about the same size as the other avatar pictures I'm seeing here. I saved it as a jpeg, I can't find the option to save it as a GIF. When I save it, there is a slider option about the image's quality. I left that at "10". Would lowering that reduce the file size?
Maybe I'm somehow trying to attach the entire Photoshop 5 program? :heh:
I doubt that, but I'm getting frustrated. I can't seem to find a means of attaching a picture to a post as a link, either.
I apologise for being such a dink about this, but I've never done much but surf on the internet, and I know nothing about html or any other programming language. Art, music, languages, those are my strong suits.

Lowering the quality would definitely reduce the file size.

However, use "Save for Web" instead of the ordinary "Save" function. It's much easier to control the size of the file by reducing the number of colors, making it a .gif, changing the settings, etc.

Oh, if the picture is a link, you'll need the address of the picture, and you should type something like this:

[ url ]http://link.link.link[ /url ]

But without the spaces.

Or, you can just copy/paste the link into a post, but the result would be different.

EDIT: Wait, did you just mispeak? From the explanation, the picture is a file. Why are you trying to attach the picture as a link? It'd have to be online for that.

If it's a file on your computer and you want to attach it to a post:

click on "Advanced" under the text box you type in for a post, which takes you to another screen with more options. Scroll down to the 'Attach Files' box and click on 'Manage Attachments'. Click on 'Browse', choose the file on your computer, and then click 'Upload' and you can close the box. The file should show up in the 'Attach Files' box on the original screen.

If it's a file/picture on the internet and you want to attach it to a post, follow the instructions at the beginning of this post. (using the url tags).

Hopefully, from there, someone could help you.

If it's a file on your computer, and you want to make it your avatar:
Click on 'My Account' then 'Edit My Avatar' (I assume you've gotten that far). Scroll down, choose 'Browse', double-click the file, the 'Save Changes'.

If it's a file on the internet, and the file on the internet is too big, you need to save the file to your computer and then follow the instructions for a file on your computer.

That's exactly what you want to do. Either click on the drop down menu and choose someithing like "low" or "medium" quality, or slider bar down to about 4. Save it and then try again.

A couple of notes about Photoshop, which might be causing you issues. I don't know how tech savvy you are, so I'm going to be real basic.

1. When you save a photoshop file, it saves it as a .psp (or something to that effect). DO NOT try to use this file as your image.

2. When you go to save your image as something else (.jpg, .gif, etc.) you want to choose .gif if you can (I think it is listed as Compuserve GIF under the format types)

2A. If you choose the "Save for Web" option, then over on the right hand side of the window that pops up will be several dropdowns. One of those dropdowns will have an option for gif, jpeg, and a couple of types of pngs.

Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 64 by 64 pixels or 4.9 KB (whichever is smaller). - This isn't an entirely true statement. Your image has to fit both criteria.

Make sure that when you are changing the size (pixel-wise) of your image, that you are changing the image property, and not just the canvas size.
