Instead of stealing or destroying it, how about a curse is laid on it that renders it unusable? It will never strike true- or on any odd number rolled, it stabs you in the leg instead of your opponent- something like that.

Use the past against him, so he now saves the day using the rapier but it has to be destroyed in the process -anything from the trap to dragon mentioned above. It sounds like he would be the kind of character to pick up the pieces, and maybe in another adventure get a chance to remake it till then he is left with shards...

It could even involve dragons since that was his original fall, the sword becomes a sacrifice... only a dragon can help them but the sword must be destroyed first-- a dragon attacks it is one he knows from the past...

Nightwalker is a bit much.. it's a 12th lvl party.
On the other hand, a friend of mine suggested the Caryatid Column from the Fiend Folio and its rather nasty Break Weapon ability everytime its attacked with a melee weapon. That just might be the creature we're looking for .

I think that having a Nightwalker crush the prized weapon from the nearest fighter then starting a heart evil villain laugh as the whole party is unable to inflict it even a single hit point of damage is a good way to have everyone flee as fast as possible. Give a way out, and an obvious reason for the NW not to chase the adventurers.

Geez, you guys and your complicated ideas! Have someone cast a shatter spell at your PC's weapon and blow your Will save. See - all done
