I need to Rant-3.5 Art

Sorry, but your knowledge of printing is probably twenty years out of date. Every book is going to have to be completely reformatted whether the art changes or not, and every page is going to require new film and plates. Personally, with most of the art I think, if ain't broke, don't fix it. I think WotC only wanted to change the art that didn't seem very inspired.

My knowledge of printing isn't 20 years out of date, and I have no idea why every book would have to be completely reformated...

Having spent 6 months of last year working on reworking reprints of books none of them, even with substantial changes, had to be reformated completely.

Could we push it back indefinitely? More ART! MORE ART! MORE ART! NEW ART!

Sorry, I got carried away.

Entirely new art would have pushed the production release back even farther.

And you don't want that, now do you ?

Ehhh.. No, that's actually not possible, considering I'd be 8 If I were 20 years out of date and had absolutely no interest in 'printing matters' at that time ;)

And yes, since I've only been doing seperate small runs of things I've been working on, I missed the fact that plates and format would have to be entirely redone, so yes, good point. It was my 'small time printer' mindset talking there..

But again, commissioning that much art on a grand scale to replace all the current stuff would be monumental. I know I tend to take a good deal of time on certain art projects I'm commissioned for because of all the back and forth-ing I have to do with the client before the right art can be stamped 'approved'

It would indeed be far more easy to simply replace selected bits, and perhaps update equipment (If there is any new equipment) and other such small things.

I think what's missing is the fact that, when I purchase a $30 dollar book, I assume I am paying for all the things inside: the writing, the art, the binding, the printing quality, the cover, etc. etc.

As far as I am concerned - I've already paid for most of the art they are selling me this time around.. lower the price or redo the art. I think it's reasonable?

Who am I kidding.. I know I'm going to buy them anyways..

AMEN

I think it is more than just the repeat of the art that bothers me. The new PHB still has those annoying lines in the background. Poor design IMO.

I really like the lines in the background. I'm glad they're still there.

ACKK!

Too much analysis of a $90 purchase!!

You're either going to buy it or you're not. At this point, I don't believe lines in the background or the lack of all totally new art is going to make a bit of difference in folks' determination of whether to buy it or not.

I was beginning to think I was the only one who liked the lines. They give the book character. The Psionics book looked boring by comparison. When I first flipped thru it I couldn't figure out what was wrong, it just looked so plain.

I think most people would have liked them more if they had been about half as thick & dark as they were. It's a nifty idea, but it does make some sections difficult to read.
