I never thought I could be convinced to pay 120$ on something without first seeing it

So, what are your thoughts on the product? Am I exaggerating some aspects of it? Are my expectations too high?
It looks interesting, but really - even if it's all right, it's not worth 120$ to me and I have nothing to do with it right now. And I don't believe I will like it that much; I don't have such good experience with Monte's products, and his OGC policies make my blood clot in angry little knots.

I am so far very pleased with the Shackled City Adventure Path I just bought, and that will fill up my D&D time for the next year or two. When I'm done with that, IF the reviews and opinions are good, and if I figure it is as comprehensive and useful, I might snag up a copy for cheap. Until such time, it just doesn't have a chance to fill my gaming needs. I already have a city campaign going.

Ptolus does indeed look pretty, and it's got all the bells and whistles to go along with it. Plus, being from Malhavoc, chances are it's probably pretty good.

That being said, what I worry about with it is that I'd buy it, and it would look pretty on a bookshelf somewhere - until it collected a thin layer of dust, of course. ;)

If I manage to get into some extra money sometime (Christmas bonus from work?), then maybe. Otherwise, probably not.

Whatever the case, Monte Cook has done one thing here - he has created an event, and one that is making gaming history. Payments - who woulda thought the day would come? :p

Like a good friend of mine once said, "If you are the kind of person that has to pay for a subscription to Money Magazine in installments, then you should really reconsider your Money priorities..."

Funny part is that he was right. If you really want to purchase this book there is no reason that you couldn't save up the money over the course of a year to buy it. Then with your hard-earned cash on hand you could go take a look at it at your FLGS and decide if it deserves your $120 dollars. An impulse buy is much harder to justify when you have the cash on hand and it is very different than when the cost is amortized over 30 years.

I will probably purchase this after I have a good chance to look at it. Sight unseen is a risky proposition, for me, when it comes to RPG purchases. Too many things sitting on a shelf gathering dust as it is.

You see, they thought of that one, the crafty salesmen they are at Malhavoc. Two words: bonus material. If you preorder you get goodies. If you wait, you don't. Why settle for just any old Ptolus when you can get a signed and numbered collector's copy, along with a handful of nifty handouts and a full-length softcover module? Don't worry about deciding now. You have until June to mull it over. But the clock is ticking. Tick. Tick. Tick. And with every tick, your numbered book becomes a higher number and therefore has less collector's value. But don't let that influence your decision. Just relax and play the games you already have. There's plenty of time to worry about Ptolus later...

Yeah, the pressure is too high. If Ptolus will sit on the shelf without being used it might as well be a Dust Collector's Item... :D

If it is a Collector's Item it will lose a lot of its value if I use it and it gets damaged so the catch-22 still applies. Buy it sight unseen and not use it because it is a "Collector's Item" or buy it sight unseen and not use it because most of it doesn't appeal to me or my player's.

I think I'll spend my Collector's Budget on things that are actually collectable.

However, I haven't been disappointed with Malhavoc's offerings in the past (AE, IH, Banewarrens) so I'm pretty sure that I would make use of it. I'm just not sure that to me it is worth $120.

The real question isn't so much "wow, it's all been fully fleshed out and indexed and pretty etc", it's whether this is the setting you actually want to run your games in. If you already like the sound of Monte's Ptolus campaign, and you have the $$$, then it's a no-brainer. The only reason I think I would buy it is research, and that's a stupid reason to drop $120 on a product. :)

Cheers,
Cam

Malhavoc Press has never missed a publish date. Malhavoc Press has never pushed back a publish date.

Peace and smiles :)

Monte's most important tip to wannabe freelancers trying to get in the business was to meet the deadlines. It's nice to see he's leading by example :)
