I sure hope only the first half of the thread title refers to the player, making the second half of the title refer to the character. If both parts of the thread title refered to the player, well, it would be a very bad thing .![]()

Oh, that sounds like a corruption corpse. Did he screw up your melee attacks when you got close to him?
He's not boss-class unless he got some kind of extra build like a warlock class add-on or something, but he does have about 2 levels on the other monsters in that encounter.
The Healing Surge Trigger distribution is an important part of the Leaders role. In a way, it is his "mini-game". (Of course, others contribute to it, too, because they have to decide whether to use a potion or second wind, or trust on the leader to heal them in time)Random aside, inspired by the Rules vs Flavor thread but more appropriate here:
One thing I did like about playing 4E was that as hit points dropped, the scramble to get a healing surge was palpable. My dwarf was knocked down to single digit hit points 3 or 4 times throughout that fight and that meant the warlords (no clerics in the party until my new character showed up) had to make decisions about who to heal, and how. It was an unexpectedly enjoyable aspect of play.
Give it time. Eventually people will come up with alternate rules. (There are already some ideas in that regard). Now, if we could just do something about that whole "encounter power" thing...
