I think my son's hooked!

A little while ago I mentioned that I'm running my 12 year old son through his first D&D game, and I thought I'd share what's been happening. I hope this doesn't end up sounding like Wil Wheaton's Dungeon Magazine articles. ;)

Anyhow, I had the party running through the forest on the trail of a bunch of goblins who had raided a supply caravan. They had paused to rest in a clearing when a handful of medium-sized monstrous spiders leaped down from the branches of the tree above them.

"You feel the weight of one of them as it lands on your shoulder and can almost hear the sound of its fangs scraping against your armor before it falls to the ground," I say.

My son's attack hit and wounded the spider with 12 points of damage -- maximum damage from his spiked chain. "Pathetic," he sneered, although I couldn't tell if he was in character or not.

He soon learned not to taunt his foes so quickly, as the spider's next attack was a critical threat, with maximum damage and a failed Fort save. The look on his face was priceless as he realized that he had lost two points of Strength and was suddenly down to three hit points.

His return attack, however, was more spectacular. He rolled a critical threat, confirmed it, and dealt maximum damage again, reducing his attacker to a small puddle of goo. If the look on his face was priceless then, it was indescribeable this time.

We're still talking about that battle. I think he's hooked. :D

The probability of all those crits + all that max damage is... staggering!

Great to hear that you've hooked another young gamer to hobby!

I started DMing my kids wjen they were 8-10 years old.

But the stories were about princes, and evil knight that stole all the candies :) But it was a lot of fun, and today (12 and 14), they are regular D&D players.

Having them play D&D makes for another layer of possible innuendos between kids and father :D :D :D

Awesome. That sounds like a great dad-son moment. As a middle-school teacher who's introduced dozens of kids to D&D over the years, I know that feeling of seeing a child's imagination catch fire when they realize that their character can try to do anything and that the story potentially never ends.

My daughter is only a toddler. I can't wait til she's old enough to play!

Ha, tell me about it! If they hadn't been rolled in the open, I wouldn't have believed it either. I loaned him those d4s for the session until he could get his own, but it looks like I won't be getting them back anytime soon!
