I think my wizard is going to be poor

I just want to make sure i read this correctly. If my wizard purchases a 1st level scroll it'll cost about 25 gp. To place the spell from that scroll into my spellbook i have to make a spellcraft check dc 15 + the level of the spell (in this case 16). Then i have to spend 200 gp per page to place it in my spellbook, the spell takes 2 pages per level. so for a first level spell it'll take 400 gold and 2 pages of my spellbook.

uhm... is that right? am i really expected to come up with 425 gp for a first level spell? or 2000 + scroll cost for a 5th level spell?

also, do i have to pay to scribe the 2 free spells i get every level as a wizard into my spellbook?

Yes, being a Wizard is expensive. Our Wizard has spent nearly 80% of outr money until the Range rcaught up by crafting items. :D

The two spells you get for gaining a level are free.

Your numbers look right.

You don't have to pay for spells gained through leveling up (they also do not require time to scribe)

thanks, it looks like those 2 extra spells a level are going to be quite nice. although that does throw a small snag in my plan to pick up elemental savant at 6th level.. losing out on 20 new spells over 10 levels could be unpleasant, unless i find another casters spellbook muahaha :D

Or you could take the best feat ever for wizards, spellbook mastery. It allows you to automatically learn your intel modifier # of spells at each level rather than 2(example-if your intel is 18 you would get 4 spells per level). I'm pretty sure that you can take at second or third level. I believe it's in either Path of Magic or Tome and Blood.

That is incorrect. It's 100gp per page, not 200. See PH, page 155.

No. They are free.

Note that scribing spells is free when you use a Boccob's Blessed Book. Any wizard should buy, find, create, or steal one of those at his first opportunity.

are you sure about that oni?
You still gain the two spells per level to your spellbook for +1 level of existing class.
wouldn't that be one of the "perks" of being a straight wizard?
I'll have to look up the +1 spells per day description.

He's right.

BTW, we dropped the scribing cost to one tenth (10gp per page), because it's ... well ... ridiculous! :)

Bye
Thanee
