I think Orcs are the mystery race...

I'd love to see orcs take the "best woodsmen in the realm" crown from the elves since the little pointy-eared guys already have the kick ass warrior and natural born spellcaster crowns. Greedy little bastards.
No more in 4e : eladrins have the "natural born spellcasters" while elves have the "best woodsmen in the realm". I guess dwarves or the mystery race will compete for "kick ass warrior".

With humans always being a close second, probably.

Tiefling will have the "disliked and feared" hat. So, this leave very few place for orcs. They will be back as CE evil guys, I think.

I'm starting to think it's shifters. There's the Cliffwalk Archer in DoD (the new mini set), and a "Werewolf Champion." Shifters also have a lot of potential for level-based acquired racial abilities, which are integral to the new edition. The only trouble is that elves kind of fill the "close to nature" archetype, but I can see how they could represent two different aspects of nature. Edit: The other thing is that it could be a gesture towards the Druid-lovers out there. They do have the shapeshifting thing going on.

The only problem is that I half-expect the new race to have a connection to the Shadowfell, which would mean something...well, spookier. The shadar-kai could work, but I'm not sure if they have the capacity for iconic status. An undead option could be interesting. I would be on board for a Necropolitan "racial" option (though it might be too uncomfortably close to WoW's undead).

Edit: The "Necropolitan" template was in Libris Mortis. It was an acquired template that turned you into an intelligent undead (basically, it gave you the undead type).

Edit2: The other problem with Shifters is that White Wolf has a well-known Werewolf brand, but I think they are sufficiently removed from that concept that it's okay.

Shifters could take the "strong-feral" stereotype, but I would prefer lizardman. Minotaurs would be okay, but I would have a large mental leap making a race with so many natural HD (6?) a core race.

Orcs? Meh. It would be okay but I would rather have something else. I like my orcs naturally evil PC fodder.

Also, Orc is kind of a lame Mystery Race. "The mystery is revealed! We're adding another half to the half-orc! An orc half!" And this is after the Tiefling and Eladrin have already been revealed? Wouldn't the natural progression be to something MORE unexpected than those two?

Edit: I should say that I wouldn't mind Orcs as a PC race in the PHB, but I'm dubious of the claim that they're the touted Mystery Race.
