Masters at creating DM frustration.
Of course, when thousands of undead start rising from their graves to kill them (and maybe succeed), destroy the world, and eat kobald and halfling flesh, maybe they'll go after the evil runes from now on.
Or, just have another party of adventurers find the thing and reap great and obvious rewards that the party wants. Taunt them with it constantly.
