I was "booed" for even showing the 4e Core books

I’ve seen gamers tear game X to shreds and swear they will never play it again.

Then someone says, “I was thinking about running X,” and those same people are the first to hop aboard.

I think our bark is worse than our bite.
Bingo!

We gamers are a passionate lot. In my group, there were three guys out of eight who were adamant against doing anything with 4E.

- One is still trying to get his head around 3E and so did not want to have to learn a new rule set. He does not play very often and is generally considered by our group to be quite eccentric with his varying attitudes to gaming.
- One simply refused to play, and simply does not play with our groups 4E game, but is continuing to avidly play our 3.x campaign.
- One hated the idea of being forced to suffer a new edition of the game, sampled 4E and hated it, but then had a talk with the DM, re-jigged his character (a striker) and now since he's "winning" again, he's happy with the game.

To the OP, if the boos were anti-WotC or tongue slightly in cheek, then I suppose I could try to understand where they were coming from. If they were fair dinkum about the booing though after you had gone to so much effort with your presentation, then that's just plain rudeness (something that gamers can also excel at upon occasion).

4e seems to be doing great here.

I know my own group best, and we love it.

It was also a hit at our local hobby shop.

I'd advise not playing with the folks who started booing a game. (Any game - not just 4e.) It's disrespectful to you, and is probably only the tip of the iceberg for any social problems they might have.

All of my books are packed up in the garage, and I'm playing video games now when I used to have a regular weekly group.

And it's a shame.
Damn, that sucks. :( Have you tried the Gamers Seeking Gamers section of this site? I don't know how much data there is at this stage, but hey, you never know, right?

4E is the first time I've had a fellow gamer roll his eyes and simply refuse to play (it broke up my group, too). I mean, we're talking about a group that would happily roll with the worst game-systems out there, simply to say we'd done it.

I am 99% positive that my former gamer-buddies would be more willing to play World of Synnibar or FATAL than 4E.

The reaction to 4e, locally, has been pretty similar, I suppose. Maybe not as vocal though, more implicit.

More widespread too, mind you. Happily, this works out well for me and those I know. :)
