I wish they'd just reboot.

I would like them to freeze all timelines and let individual DMs progress the campaign setting.

I know you can do that anyway, but I don't like all these writers changing the basics of a campaign setting (Prism Pentad/Faction War etc).

To be fair, Troy Denning was changing his own setting with the Prism Pentad, and the changes he made were part of the overall plan for the setting.

And suddenly shifting the entire pantheon is not going to have an effect your ongoing campaign?
No, because I'll use all the same gods I always do. Why would I change them?

Or going through some sort of spellplague transition period?
I could:
1. Make it a plot point in the campaign like I did for the 2E-3E transition.
2. Just smooth it over and don't worry about retconning it. Wizards cast spells. Wizards always used to cast spells. Nothing has changed.
3. Start a new campaign (i.e. a reboot)

I don't see 3 as being more compelling than 1 or 2.

Everyone does suggest that you do not convert characters mid-campaign anyways.
No, they say there will be no "formula" for converting 3E characters to 4E. They also say that you should instead use the 4E rules to rebuild the character based on the character concept rather than on the 3E mechanics.

I don't forsee Bane in Greyhawk, Pelor in FR, or even Aureon in Planescape, for that matter. That said, the nostalgia in me likes the idea of a "reboot," but those who have already played it once probably aren't going to be happy with a rehash of the original material, so it's probably not a sale-worthy idea. You have given me an inspiration for June of 2008, though. I can envision a bunch of 4E characters jumping into the Ruined Moathouse outside Hommelet, because none of my current group of players I don't think has ever played it... :D

I don't know if it's for that, or if it's to jumpstart flagging FR sales from the past few years; it could be either one, because I haven't heard any sales figures.

On a related aside, this is pretty much why I'm currently running a 3.5 conversion of Keep on the Borderlands currently. I'm the old grognard—my players in that game are a bunch of young whippersnappers. :p
