D&D 5E I wish we could get more racial variety with Kobolds.

I would like to see Kobolds of different colours that coincide with the various Chromatic Dragons.

Blue Kobolds of the desert.

Red Kobolds of the fiery mountains.

Green Kobolds of the forests.

Black Kobolds of the swamps.

White Kobolds of the frozen north.

It'd be super easy to add those as action or trait options, like the variant giant types in Storm King's Thunder. It's the kind of option that would have been awesome in Volo (but only a couple monsters got them, like hags and yuan-ti).

I could easily see that as a cool DMsGuild product. It's small and focused enough. I'd buy it.

Pathfinder did this, first as fluff alone, and then mechanically as part of their Kobolds of Golarion sourcebook. One of the last parts of the book lists a bunch of optional racial traits you can have with a kobold who specifically resembles (at least in color) a chromatic dragon, from red-scaled kobolds with the ability to cast Spark to white-scaled kobolds who can create sheets of ice with a pseudo-breath weapon. It even had three unique color-based traits; Carnation Scales that give you a bonus to Survival checks, Golden Scales that penalize Diplomacy checks with fellow kobolds but boost them against humanoids, and Purple Scales that let you pick up Aklo or Deeptongue as a bonus language.

It's partly why my homebrewed kobolds have a lot of different, optional racial traits.

My campaign has something like that, by player request. They had started in another person's campaign. So many different tribes didn't really fit in mine, so I simply ruled that the environment of the egg determines what color kobold hatches. So the kobolds in my arctic campaign are mostly white kobolds with cold resistance, but if they laid their eggs in a volcano they could hatch red instead (or cook).

Nothing says that we can't have more racial variety with kobolds. Just because it isn't written in a book doesn't mean it can't happen. That is the cool thing about creating fantasy worlds - the architects and those that play in those worlds have carte blanche to make these kinds of things happy. Write it up! Make it happen! The power is at your fingertips to make it happen.
