(IC) Quickleaf's Rime of the Frostmaiden

Lumrolur just hangs on Aric, considering the leader of the kobolds and their precarious position in trusting it. Let's hope its greed outweighs its greed.

"Come!" he motions to the kobold leader "You need to talk to your clan above."

It's difficult to say which is more nerve-wracking – clinging to your goblin ally shapeshifted into a massive hairy-legged spider up the shaft dropping into darkness or riding the rickety bucket lift operated by the kobolds turning a creaking crank. Only Jack, with his gossamer wings glistening like snowmelt, seems unphased by the ascent.

Your kobold ally Trex meets with two more kobolds – the ones wielding saws and mallets – and convinces them to let you pass with some rather exaggerated hand gestures that appear to emulate various monsters of the Underdark and backstabbings. Trex turns back to you with a pointed thumbs up, "It's a yes plan!"

Crossing wooden planks and struts you can look down the vertical shaft that you originally ascended from, now too deep and dark to see the bottom. Sounds of the narrow waterfall cascading from the northeast wall allow you to wrap around the corner before Lumrolur spots silhouettes of cultists engaged in vigorous conversation.

They seem none the wiser to your presence.

GM: Thanks to the water sounds and your kobold allies, you're all automatically hidden. If you want to get close enough to eavesdrop on the cultists or get line of sight to them...you'll need to make a Stealth roll to avoid detection (or have some kind of power that would justify you being able to hear despite the rushing water).

Oskar does nothing, not wanting to make too much noise. He waits quietly for direction from the others.

Jack whispers with a smirk, "Trex, you’re a true schemer after my own heart. We’ll be back soon for the main event!" With a final wink, he flits toward the party.

Once they’re huddled near the walkway’s edge, Jack whispers to the group, "Alright, let’s slip out over by the top of the waterfall while those cult-mongers are still deep in their monologues. No sense in ruining our chances for a grand ambush later."

He gestures toward the giant arachnid, "Spider-Aric, you can ferry folks out one or two at a time, above the waterfall, while I scout ahead. And while we’re at it, let’s get a better look at that waterfall entrance, and see if it’s a good spot to spring our trap later. Move quiet, move quick and, whatever you do, don’t slip. I hear gravity’s a real stickler about second chances!"

The dwarf heeds both the instructions and warnings of the fairy. Oskar’s a guest in their party, after all.

Alma, still in Perilou form, looks to Logrim. In his head, he hears her voice. Better to use this than risk trying to converse over the roar of the waterfall.

I believe Spider Aric is capable of holding both of us without much trouble. We may as well pair up again to save time.

GM: If you're thinking of going along the Northeast waterfall passage... it's a tight squeeze for Medium creatures. Jack, Lumorolur, and Logrim (and kobolds) would fit no problem. @Steve Gorak Aric, in Large spider form, wouldn't be able to fit in that passage.

Aric, in giant spider form, ferries the entire party to the waterfall mouth. The narrow passage churns with fast-moving water below you, as one-by-one you brace yourselves against outcroppings in the walls, moving carefully to avoid slipping into the current and being swept down into the Underdark. All cross safely, including Trex and two kobolds, but attempting such a route under pressure would be far riskier.

You emerge into a cavern supported by a natural stone pillar near the water's edge. The water pours from a fissure in the north wall, with faint wisps of steam emanating there. Lumrolur recognizes signs of geothermal activity immediately, which must be what keeps the river from freezing.

A pair of halfling-sized gray rats with beady eyes skitter away from the warm water to pause at the west end of the cavern, watching you nervously. Beyond the giant rats, the passage branches left and right...
