(IC) The Chaos principle

After finishing his mug of dwarf spirit, Kharas say. "Well, sir, I am surprise of that offer. I was thinking you would use my skills to put traps all over the city for the protection of the good citizens. I am more usefull in the middle of an old tomb than on any plane. One more mug of dwarf spirit please! I must tell that many years of dungeon exploring, I have seen many things, and I think I had to fight once one of those frog, called by an old cult. Pretty anoying it was. Anyway, that would make a change in my routine, and that would not be that bad, so I will accept.

And one more thing Sir, you should take my borther under your wings, his knowledge of magic and traps could help you a lot in the protection of the city. The Rockfall family is reknown in the dwarven kingdoms for their craftmanship!"

He takes his new mug, and take another good hal of the content.

*Quilla furrows her brow at the comment that there might be a gate to Pandemonium.*

So, my thought was right...

"We can attempt to find the source of the chaos here on this plane, or go to Pandemonium and try to find it from that side. I have a crystal ball... and I might be able to follow one of these creatures as they move about. Perhaps we could see where one comes from. Unless someone has a better divination method than I," Quillia offers. Preena cautiously pokes her head out of the gnome's robes, now that the startlement of seeing the werebear has worn off.

Thinking to herself for a moment, not wishing to blurt her musings out to hastily, Susanna calmy causes her voice to rise from the rear of the chamber over the numerous others in the chamber.

"Khelban Arunsun, Archmage of Faerun, do not try to play us like saps here. We all have heard of your intellect and prowess, and the story you tell is rather.....thin."

Susanna's face crumples in thought once more as the Archmage's eyes rest upon her. Rustling through her pockets for a piece of charcoal and a small sheet of paper, she eventually calmly looks up once more into the face of the mage.

"You are a powerful wizard yourself Khelban, and are associated with other great powers of the Realms as well. I'm sure that there are many in this room that cause the evil of these lands nightmares, but we did not get here by pretending to be...how does it go again, mushrooms?"

"If it were as simple as finding and closing a gate, there would be hundreds of capable people able to do it, why drag us from our homes to help? There is something more to this obviously, something that you know and aren't telling us."

Susanna allows her gaze to drift across the others in the room.

"Lets us speak honestly people, when we were called her did we not expect something a little more...dire? By the sound of what is happening, and how wide spread the trouble is, there must be more than one gate or portal open. Chaos may be unpredictable, but they are not stupid. As soon as they could enter the Realms physically they no doubt opened several more 'support' gates. No doubt the primary gate is powerful enough to lend it's magic to the lesser ones, either that or they have an extremely powerful group of magic wielders on their side to create independant ones."

"So which is it Khelban, because I see in your eyes that you have something very specific in mind for us, and though I am willing to assist, I don't like it at all..."

"So? What does it matter if the Archmage has called us to help? Perhaps it is a thin story, but the consequences all around us call for immediate action! If there is not one gate, then perhaps there are many. Perhaps someone has opened multiple portals to Pandemonium. We will not know unless we try to use our resources instead of making accusations.

"We know you are skilled Archmage, what prevents you from aiding us or finding the source of this disturbance, if I may be so bold? Can you not abandon your post? Why summon some of the more powerful forces in Faerun if you didn't have a more definite direction to aim us? Surely you have much better means at your disposal to discern the problem, even if you lack the time to have you and yours deal with it," Quillia says, her voice somewhat stern. Preena also adopts a rather fierce little scowl.

"Come, come, there is no need for anger." The great bear seems much more troubled by this dissent than by the possibility of invading Pandemonium. "Regardless of the wizard's motives, it is clear that something must be done. So, we must do it. None of you doubt this, else you would not be here. There is no cause to raise voices, nor tempers."

"Something must be done, however randomly wandering planes until we find what we seek is probably not the way to do it. I would imagine that any information on the enemy has only been obtained with great difficulty and cost, and I would suppose is highly confidential except to those who need to know," Takarna looks at Khelben with an upturned eyebrow, "Until one accepts to undertake the task, then one does not need to know."
"Nevertheless an infusion of wild chaos into the world is not a development I would welcome. There is much be gained by pooling knowledge and my co-operation is assured, provided that all necessary intelligence and detail is made availible as good allies should."

"Slow downs lads! The old poor dwarf in front of you have some difficulty to follow all that. My brother should be there to explain what you are telling. So, there seems to be at least two persons here who are pretty good magic user. Well, if that's the case, portals are pretty big magic, wouldn't you able to detect such forces? I know you learn soon how to detect trace of magic, at your power, you could divine one or two things. Or maybe we could ask the Gods. Selune may not be really happy with all that.

Maybe our host knows a bit more, since he is fithing the threat from a bit longer time than us?"

Susanna looks about at the chaos and dissent that she has fostered and shakes her head in guilt.

"I apologise for my behaviour everybody, it's just...Faerun isn't just our world, it's the god's as well. Sometimes I wonder their motives when they choose not to warn us of events...such...as..."

Her sentence trails off into a look of half-comtemplation, half-horror.

"We were warned!"

"If Choas truely has spread into our lands, even the laziest deity of goodness would have warned us. I know that none of us has been handed the answer on a silver platter, but none of us really look like prophets."

"Unless I am mistaken at least a few individuals warned us of this event, but us stuck in our ivory towers of greatness ignored their pleas of help. I think that tracking down prophets may be a good place to start, why cast powerful spells of divination to our gods when they have already tried to warn us."

Underneath her breath Susanna swears, though the words are lost to your ears it is plain that she is beating herself up over something.

"Sometimes we should through our magic armour aside, ignore the mighty hammer of the gods that we plundered from some tomb or another, and listen to our common sense..."

"I have a feeling that what we are coming up against is nastier than we all think, and the smallest piece of information that we ignore could cost any one of us our lives..."

Khelben listens to what has been said as he sips on some wine.

"Yes i believe there are more than one gate, as yet we are not precisely sure where the gate or gates are, it would seem the creators of said gates have worked real hard to hide them, i have a team scanning for anomllies right now. I believe i can give you a general location soon but general is probably the only info you will get on this.

It is possible that you may need to leave Faerun to get this taken care of. As to prophecies on this happening im sure you are probably right on this, but as you if the signs were there i missed them also.

Acouple of you have made mention that maybe you are not the most useful i disagree with this a diverse group will be more usefull in the long run. I can not handle this myself due to my obligations to the protection of this city.

Now i should have the general area of the gates soon, while you wait please enjoy the hospitality that we can offer and get to know each other better. Now if you will exscuse me for a few moments i will go check on the efforts to locate the gates."

With that Khelben finishes his wine and leaves the room.

The robed Githzerai has quietly observed the heated conversation, not wanting to take part until Susanna manages to calm the atmosphere. The robed figure stands up and speaks for the first time in a clear and peaceful tone. "Wise words, My Lady. When the world around you is collapsing, always go back to basics."

The monk pauses and bows once more. "Accept my apologies not to introduce myself earlier. I am Dalaa Gand of the Githzerai. My kind rarely interferes in affairs of others and I am not here as representative of my people, but I have come to offer my aid in this task. I believe I can help, because I know what we are fighting."

"My kind lives in Limbo, the plane of pure chaos. It is also the home of the slaadi, who are one of the Limbo natives, creatures of pure chaos. The Githzerai are not creatures of chaos, we fight daily to survive the ever-changing environment. I wouldn't be surprised if a gate to Limbo had also been opened. It would explain the presence of the slaadi."
