OOC:
You only got to roll _one_ damage die (obviously the largest one). So damage on a dagger + smite is

4 (max 1d4 from dagger) + 3 + 16 (max 2d8 from smite) + 1d8

So that's 23+1d8. It basically works out to be an average crit damage plus a little more for the one extra die...takes away the swinginess in exchange for just a little extra damage.

Either way it's enough to finish off the wererat

Ezraen plunges his blade into the wererat's throat while calling upon Lathander for mercy for the gnome. The creature goes limp and sputters as dark liquid pools under it.

The kuo-toa release their gripe on the rat and everyone goes silent and looks at each other uneasily....no one seems sure what happens next.

OOC: Erevan is up. The kuo-toa don't seem to be spoiling for a fight but they seem willing to give you one if you choose it. So it's up to you all if we come out of initiative or not.

Ezraen falls to his knees, catching Turvy in his arms. The paladin looks like a broken man, tears streaming down his cheeks. I'm so sorry, Turvy... I failed you... I hope you know peace...

Erevan moves to Topsy instead, looking worried.

"What just happened? Did the ritual work for her?"

The elf looks confused and sad, not hostile at all.

"I... I heard two voices. One was Lathander, of that I have no doubt. The other... a gurgling voice, it said, The sacrifice has been paid... The last thing I heard before Turvy went wild was Lathander... You cannot save them all. I... I failed them," Ezraen looks up at his Elven friend. "Topsy... Is she okay?"

"I'm... not sure," Erevan replies, examining the little woman but clearly unsure of how to do so. "She seems uninjured. Wait, you heard a voice? I didn't hear anything of the sort."

Surana retrieves her normal weapons from Erevan's pack. She sheathes them quietly, looking defeated and uninterested in another fight...until Ezraen speaks.

She turns and looks hard at Ploop, suddenly alert again. "'The sacrifice'? Explain."

Ploop (through Shuushar) explains he also heard the voices of the gods. The Sea Mother was battling the spirit that infected both gnomes. This requires awakening those spirits. But then something happened. She sensed a betrayal and revoked her protection from one of them. It was not his doing he says.

Realization suddenly dawns on Ezraen's face, "Oh gods... it was my fault..."

Dirty streaks barely visible down his dusky face, "Not a sacrifice, a debt for my interference."

"Betrayal?! We stand waiting to risk our lives for her, and she kills our friend over some imagined betrayal?!"

She grabs a handful of mud from the ground and flings it at the statue's face in a rage. "Here's a betrayal, you lying Sea B*tch!"
