Hey, Tim, when you get a chance, send me an e-mail. I want to talk to you about ICE and The Essence Companion.

Not to hijack, but two points:

1) ICE will have a time shaking the reputation, as many illustrators were also burned by the old management and I doubt would work for the company again.

2) What does this have to do with D20? Shouldn't it be [OT] tagged?

hehe.. well, now you have narrowed it down to two possible persons........

Whose email address I have neither of. So, you send me an email at rasyr@dugger.dynu.com so we can talk...

Ichabod, if you didn't know, ICE is under entirely new management after sale at bankruptcy. ICE had a very bad reputation in the past about paying it's authors and deservedly so. I say this with authority because I was one of them.

I know exactly who is running ICE right now, and it is not entirely new management. It is under new ownership, which is an entirely different thing. The actual managers at ICE are holdovers from the multiple times they bilked authors, artists, and employees. Some of people currently managing ICE even profitted from the bankruptcy.

Let me rephrase:

I would respond, except that they're requiring a thorough knowledge of the rules.

Since I have such an intense personal dislike for the rules, which has nothing whatsoever to do with their actual quality as rules (which is, as we all know, a purely subjective judgement that can have no objective basis) I feel that I cannot respond with clear conscience.

Is that better?

Yeah. A bit. As I certainly dont want to get into a name calling contest. I enjoy these forums too much to get into that kind of argument.

Personally, I've been a life-long fan of the ICE games but get a lot of use of various d20 products with ICE games. I've also been a fan of D&D for even longer.

They do have some new financial management, which I think is key though.

I'll just point people to an interview with the new owner, here .

I'm not going to go even near that last accusation of yours Craig.

Hey Ichabod,

You never will change will you? Remember all the times I helped you out at your old retail store and never was repaid or even asked to be repaid? Many people have reason to be angry with me and the old ICE. You are not one of them.

Sulimo, what he is talking about in regards to profiting from the bankruptcy is that the Trustee stuck a commission for me in on the sale of the old ICE's assets. I actually asked him not to do it, but I had worked for several hundred of hours trying to get the most bang for the buck and he did anyway. (Still am working on it actually as all the assets are not yet sold.) It is not normal for the ex-management to work on helping to sell the assets in a Chapter 7 so he felt the unusal effort merited a commission and it was approved by the judge.

Now it only counts as a "profit" if you ignore the several hundred thousand dollars me and my family lost in the bankruptcy, LOL. I will let people be their own judge.

Then again he might mean the fact that I was essentially hired by the new owners of the assets. However, I was pretty much offered a job by every serious bidder on the assets after I worked with them on it so that was fairly inevitable.

As for the rest? Time will tell.

And Ichabod, I am not the rather easy going person you knew at ICE as the bankruptcy process was a rough one.

Any chance ICE will be dealing with the Tolkein Estate again? I loved all the MERP products they used to make. Since Decipher is only handling things during the WOTR that leaves most of the history of Middle Earth to do.

I am really glad that you loved the MERP stuff, but ICE will never again be handling anything that is associated with Tolkein Enterprises. (note: the licese for the LOTR trilogy is through Tolkein Enterprises, and entirely different entity from Tolkein Estate). At least, not unless all the gods of the entire universe conspire against us all at the same time.

I can only take pity on poor Decipher. WOTC even turned down the license for it cause of all the special clauses that were in it. It effectively hamstrings them in certain ways, and that will be to their disadvantage in the long run.

Decipher is severely limited in what they can do in their version of the Middle Earth setting, and it will never become as rich and as detailed as MERP was. They can only use what is in the books, they are not allowed to use the appendices (from what I have heard). This will severely limit what they are allowed to use/create.
