Ice Ogre form Judges Guild

HOwdy, this is my first attempt to convert a 1E monster so I am sure it is riddled with mistakes. ANy suggestions are welcome.

The Ice Ogre first appeared in Operation Ogre, a Judges Guild module by Michael E. Mayeau. They are slightly tougher, cold dwelling ogres with access to some spells and a breath weapon. I never saw them ANYWHERE but in this small module so I always kinda thought I was the only one who liked the guys.

Here they are:

Ice Ogre
Large Giant
Hit Dice: 6d8+24 (51 hp)
Initiative: 0
Speed: 30 ft.
AC: 17 (-1 size, +8 natural)
Attacks: 2 claws +10
Damage: Claw 1d6+6;
Face/Reach: 5 ft. by 5 ft./10 ft.

Special Attacks: Breath Weapon,
Special Qualities: Spells, cold resistance 20
Saves: Fort +9, Ref +2, Will +4

Abilities: Str 22, Dex 10, Con 18, Int 8, Wis 10, Cha 10

Skills: Climb +11, Concentration +9
Feats: Weapon Focus (claw), Iron Will

Climate/Terrain: cold

Organization: Solitary, pair, gang (2-4), or band (5-8)
Challenge Rating: 6

Treasure: Standard
Alignment: Neutral evil
Special Abilities:

Breath Weapon: Ice ogres can breathe a 20 foot cone of cold for 3d8 points of damage (Reflex DC 17 for half) three times per day.

Spells:
At will:
See invisible,Polymorph Self (into a block of ice only),Detect Good
1/ day:
Invisibility, Levitate

Here are some specific questions:

Is the claw damage for Large creatures 1d6 or 1d8?
Do large creatures all get reach with natural weapons?
Does a 6HD monster only get one feat?
DO they need to have a 14 Cha to cast Polymorph other as a spell like ability?
What is the formula for the breath weapon DC (I used 10 +1/2 HD+dex modifier)?
Did I make any math mistakes?
Is this a Cr 6?

EDIT: Fixed attack bonus, added feat and changed charisma, CR and DC for breath weapon as per karyant's suggestions.

nice job! There is a file somewhere on how to make a monster from Dragon 276. That should answer your questions. I'm at work and just off the top of my head I think I can answer a few...

I'd give it reach like a normal orge...
For damage check the original damage. If there is a high modifier like +6. I'd bump it up one die size ie from d6 to d8.
IIRC the CR is based on hit dice..So I think it would lbe at least CR 6 maybe 7 since it has spell like abilites. For those I dont think it needs concentration to make them work. Scott, Erica or Boz are the experts though :) I would give it ranks in Spot or Search...

A little background on the Ice Ogre.

Normally, they don't use weapons or armor. (THe leader will but I am going ot give him some fighter levels when I have the base monster figure out.) That is why the Natural armor is so high. I am a little concerned about that. Seems exploitable.

In 1E they got one attack at a 6HD monsters THACO doing 2-12 points of damage. It seemed approptriate to give them 2 claw attacks because most creatures have that. Again, I am up for a suggestions on that.

In 1e they had a major resistance to cold (1/4 damage on made save, 1/2 damage on failed save) I thought this was the same as sold resistance 20. Could be wrong.

To get their abilities I took the standard Ogre and increased str (2) dex (2), con (2), Int (2) and chr (6). The module calls them "hardier" than normal ogres. This seemed appropraite.

I exchanged Weapon focus greatclub for claw.

THe CR has real stumped me. I am figuring these guys as no more than a 4. I don't think they are better than an ogre mage. but I think a 3rd level party could take one.


Well, here is my motivation. I am just gonna sit back and wait for the critiques now!

Here, i found a little mistake, Ice Ogre is a 6HD Giant, that has BAB as cleric, so BAB = 4, +6 for bonus strenght and +1 for weapon focus with a total of the +11. The correct entry should be:
Attacks: 2 claws +11


Damage: Claw 1d6+6;
Face/Reach: 5 ft. by 5 ft./10 ft.
Special Attacks: Breath Weapon,
Special Qualities: Spells, cold resistance 20
Saves: Fort +9, Ref +2, Will +2


Here a comment, in my oppinion 1d6 is good for a large giant :, and the saves values are Ok.


Abilities: Str 22, Dex 10, Con 18, Int 8, Wis 10, Cha 14
Skills: Climb +11, Concentration +9
Feats: Weapon Focus (claw)

The Ice Ogre should be other feat, for example Power attack. Because Giants gain feats 1 in the first level and +1/4 extra HD.

Nope, CR this creature should be 6 or 7, in my oppinion CR 7 it's more appropriated. I explain, 51/4.5/3 it's approximately 3.7, for +1 or +2 for each relevant special ability.

In this case i am not sure but a think that the correct DC should be DC 13, 10 + 1/2HD +Dex modifier.

The first question i respond above, the second question in my oppinion is yes.


Does a 6HD monster only get one feat?

How, i explain above, the 6HD Gaint gain 2 feats.

In my oppinion, it's not necessary this monster have Cha 14 to cast Polymorph other.

Only, a few but this happen :)
 

The corrections suggested by karyant are correct, except for the Attack bonues. The -1 Size modifier applies to AC as well as Attack bonuses.

The claw melee bonus should be +10: 4 (for 3/4HD) + 6 (for Str) - 1 (for Size) + 1 (for Weapon Focus).

Also, if youll check page 8 of the 3e MM, youll find the formula for calculating the DC for a breat weapon. Its 10 + 1/2HD + Con bonus. Therefore, a 6HD critter with an 18 Con has breathweapon DC 17 (10 +3 +4).

Aside from that, looks like ya got a keeper! You might want to describe the ability to turn itself to ice as a power unto itself, rather than just have it be a limited version of polymorph self. If you need help there, let me know! :)
 

Thanks. For some reason I thought Giants got BAB as wizards!

I added iron will because I was worried about their will save being to low.


I don't know about their CR. I don't think thier better than ogre magis (5) or much better than Yeties (4). I changed it to 6 anyway.


Breath wepaon was changed.

Thanks for all the help. I am pretty happy with the finished product. The only question I have left is the CR. My gut keeps telling me it is a 5. But I thought it was a 3/4 to begin with so I am doubting myself now.

ANy suggestions?
