Beyond those statted out in the 1E Rogues Gallery, who were the 1E iconic characters and where did they appear?

The only two I can think of are Emirikol the Chaotic (naturally) and Warduke, but that's only because I saw him on the cartoon all the time and had the action figure...even if he was statted out for the regular D&D Shady Dragon Inn.

Wait! Duh, Tenser and Mordenkainen. Edited to add...buuuuuuuuuuut they were statted out in the Rogues' Gallery.

D'oh. :heh:

I wouldn't have said there were any. No stats for a long time, or unified depictions of them. I can't remember any mentions in the PHB that were not statted out in the Rogue's Gallery. The names of mages are about it, I think.

"Iconic" + "not in Rogues Gallery"? Hmm, toughie.

The goblins going "Bree yark!" and the mad hermit in Keep on the Borderlands, mebbe?

The nameless adventurers in the DMG who go chasing the monk's scrollcase and then have their hinders handed to them by ghouls, perhaps?

The guys stealing the gems out of the demon statue's eyes on the PHB cover?

-The Gneech

No such thing. (Not even in the Rogues Gallery.)

Edit: The closest thing you'll find to "iconic" characters during that era would probably be Morgan Ironwolf, Silverleaf, Black Dougal, etc. in the Moldvay Basic Set.

Hmmm. Is there a list of those characters and their classes?

Sorry, what did you mean by the Moldvay Basic Set?

Lets see...

Black Dougal: Thief (m)
Frederick: Dwarf (m)
Morgan Ironwolf: Fighter (f)
Silverleaf: Elf (m)
Sister Rebecca: Cleric (f)

I pretty sure those are the main ones; they are used pretty consistently throughout the ruleset to illustrate examples of dungeon exploration, combat, roleplay, etc.

The "Moldvay" Basic Set; so named because Tom Moldvay edited (i.e., re-wrote) the rules.
