Iconic 1E characters?

How about Saren, Grimslade, Indel, and Valerius from the old D&D comic ads?

The closest thing to an iconic class character in AD&D 1st edition, was really the nameless Paladin in Hell, IMHO. I remember seeing that as a kid and it making a huge impression and why my first AD&D character was a paladin

That's good info on Erac's Cousin there...I've got a party of adventurers trying to bring him to justice in my AD&D game...hmm...
