Iconic Dragon Encounters of Classic D&D

Hm. Was that in addition to the behir that was in that mod?

Dungeon magazine had a few classic dragon adventures. Flame in issue #1 and some other issue where he had a return (#50?), Vesicant and the black dragon in... was it Thiondar's Legacy?

In addition to, yes. The behir was actually in the caverns. This was outside in the mountains before you got there (or as your tried to get back out of the mountains afterwards). But I am definitely not thinking of the behir (though was going to mention it in the original post and decided against it since it is not a "dragon" proper :)

There really never were any iconic dragons in the game... which is why the WotC designers commented having such a hard time deciding on the name of the Wrath of Ashardalon board game. Unlike the Castle Ravenloft boardgame which almost every D&D player would recognize the branding of... they realized there wasn't an iconic dragon they could use, and Ashardalon (sp?) was the best they could come up with (in an attempt to make Ashardalon INTO an iconic dragon.)

There's really only one named dragon that is iconic in the game, and that's Tiamat. That's it. And as she became a god over time... she couldn't really be used for the board game.

The big problem with 1E dragons was that they were such push overs given the treasure you could expect from even the lowliest dragon. A full grown red wasn't much of a match for even a moderately armed party of 8th level characters.

Before UA it was if played intelligently to the best of its ability.

I thought they did a pretty good job with him over the course of 3E, between their Adventure Path modules -- he's in the Sunless Citadel and Bastion of Broken Souls and mentioned several other times, I believe -- and in Draconomicon.

But yes, it does seem like WotC ought to plan on one big dragon-centric soon-to-be-classic adventure each edition.

To add to the list of dragons in 1e:

A pair of adult reds in UK4 When a Star Falls. These babes attack the PCs when they are leaving a svirfneblin lair in probably battered condition. My players really showed fear in this moment...

Another one: a white dragon in the BD&D adventure Creature of the Rhyll in early Dragon magazine (I forget the issue -- 26 or so I think). Novel as it's intended to be an opponent for a 1-3 level introductory adventure.

I remember FLAME. In one of is appearances I think they had kobolds that were so feared that the local Hill Giant tribe collected their heads as tokens of bravery. Put in a good twist and good ideas of how to make low level enemies something even high level characters could fear.

This is a dragon thread though, so I shouldn't be reminescing about such things I suppose.
