Iconic Dragon Minis - For Use In Game Or Just A Display Piece?

Since we have no other gargantuan or colossal minis, they get a lot of use in my Age of Worms campaign, where such creatures are the norm later on. As far as using them for what they actually represent, no, I haven't used them for that... yet. I plan to.

I absolutely intend to use them in actual play. Sucks that I have to wait for a group to get high enough level to take them on...
That's the problem that I would have. My PC's are currently 7th level. It will be a long time before they even face a Gargantuan Dragon considering they are CR 20+. On top of that is the fact that Dragons are very tough for their CR to begin with.

Take a lower CR dragon and bump its size category a couple of notches. A Large blue dragon is CR 8. Two size increases could bump it to (I'm guesstimating here) CR 12-14. Far less than the CR 20 it would otherwise have.

I noticed that a lot of people seem to be raving about the Iconic Dragons (i.e. Colossal Red Dragon, Gargantuan Black and Blue Dragons). Are you actually planning on using them in your D&D game or did you get them just for display?

Personally I think that they look cool but I don't think that I could justify spending that much money to get any of them since they would almost never see any use in my game.

I do both. They are on display and I use them for play. I am using the D&D 20th Level Dragon Challenge with these pre-gens.

It's lots of fun and bypasses the many months waiting for PCs to level up.

Just out of curiosity, do the dragons come with stats pregenerated? I would be interested in seeing what the CR levels are for the dragons. The blue would be used, if I had it, and maybe the black. I think the red is overpriced, to be honest.

The blue is the most likely to see action, but it will be a while until I can work him in.
Most likely the Red will just be used for Intimidation ;)

Not only do I plan on using them in game, I've already used the Gargantuan Black to destroy the party (nearly a complete TPK, but one got away) during a one-shot I ran over three days to ring in the new year.

I'm getting anxious to find out when the next of the chromatics will be out as an Iconic because I've got a fun little arctic jaunt in mind for a one-shot I'm thinking of running around the July 4th holiday weekend.

As for the CR question mentioned, I believe the Red was at CR 26 and the Black was at CR 21 or 22. I don't remember the Blue off hand as the three dragons are dominating a shelf I built for them in the home office and I'm not there at the moment.

The colossal red moves over 6 FEET PER ROUND in 1 inch squares. Maps just dont work for those battles in that scale unless its stupidly styanding in one place trading full attacks. In which case you dont need minis. A better option is to use a tactical scale, as hills and houses are your terrain in such a battle.

They do come with oversized stat cards for both Minis and D&D, but IIRC they have pretty much the CR given in the MM (20 for the wyrm black, 21 for the ancient blue and 26 for the great wyrm red).
