Idea For A Villiage/Town. Is it evil?

An armed society is a dangerous society, the wrong people are the ones using the guns 99 % of the time, if noone has guns, noone has to defend against them, if ordinary people defend themselves with guns, the criminals will arm themselves; you can run from a guy with a knife but you cant outrun a bullet; you cant kill dozens of people with a knife if you are tired at life and tired at other people's lives; you cant rob a bank with a knife, etc, etc...

For polite society: Nothing proves this. If history has shown anything, it is almost the other way around. The amount of weapons in a society is a measurement of how bad the government can control the criminals in the society.

If an armed society is a polite society, how do you explain the rap NYC got before Sept. 11? I mean, hey, it's legal to own firearms in the US....just curious, of course. :)

...Of course, we don't get free kills....

....On-topic: Not evil. There are times when the Good must even kill their fellow sentient beings -- such as when they are Evil. I'd say it's pretty strong neutrality, maybe leaning a bit in the Lawful direction (chaotic people would have no problem with a slaughter. Even CG people would stoop to that "free ticket" if they could do it and be pretty sure nobody else would be hurt in the process...and then they'd go a bit beyond that, too. :))

Interesting idea, but human nature being what it is, how could this type of society survive? How many citizens would the sherriff have to kill before they decided to defend themselves, or run away? The idea is intriguing, but just doesn't seem workable.

As for evil, I wouldn't call it evil outright.

med stud: You can rob a bank with a ball point pen if your determined to rob it. You can also kill a dozen (or thousands if you use the knife to hijack a plane) people with a knife! Remember guns dont kill PEOPLE kill.

The reason for leagalized firearms is simple, if its illeagel, the only segment of society who wont arm themselves is the law abiding citizens, the criminal will have no such compunction.

Was going to write something but am to mad

As to the foolish law the city has. Allowed one free kill. Why live there at all. Move to another village where If I accidently run over farmer brown's dog he won't kill me I will only have to pay some money for it. That town would have long ago either killed themsevles off or all left.

I agree, human nature is against this.

Of course, D&D is a game of more than just humans...

A creepy gnome village with one free kill each is a nice little set up.

Maybe some inbreeding would help.

Gnomes + Inbreeding + 1 free kill = Creepy town

Channels nemm and morrus.

Alright, take the political discussion to Nutkinland! (http://pub53.ezboard.com/bnutkinland)

Stops channeling and tries to pull the thread back on topic.

I too think that the city concept is more funny than evil. It's certainly unrealistic.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't add it to a campaign. I think it's a great idea. Especially if you add some underlying reasons for the PCs to find out -- like perhaps a large-scale enchantment on the town allowing this odd-ball way of doing things to work.

It'd also be a good way to introduce a recurring antagonist for the PCs...

This town would work well as a small domain or large pocket domain in Ravenloft. Perhaps the Mists won't let any of the residents leave, so they are all forced to live there, abiding by the Darklord's (the Mayor or the Sheriff) law and trying their best to keep from being killed.

The idea of a seemingly nice and friendly town with a horribly dark secret is extremely Ravenloft-ish.

This is a great idea. Consider the idea yoinked!

An interesting aside:

I hang out in bars and nightclubs quite a bit. I moved to Boston from Calgary, Canada a while back. I noticed that guys in the clubs were a lot less pushy. When I went back to Canada on vacation, I couldn't believe it when people would bump into me.
