Idea for Any Game with Beholders or Similar Creatures

First Post
Howdy, all.

Been lurking here for a while, finally signed up and this is my first post.

I recently added creatures called Dimensional Urchins to my AD&D2E game. They create large, semi-magical pearls that are valued as spell components for Identify spells, and for their great rarity and worth (up to 2000 GP for large ones). This, of course, makes these Urchins exceedingly rare on the Prime Material as they've learned to avoid it.

These Urchins inspired a tangential thought that perhaps beholders might create pearls or something similar in the tear duct of their main eye. They must have something analogous to tear ducts, as eyes must be kept moist and lubricated (unless your beholders have a clear solid cover over their eyes similar to a snake). I like the idea of beholders that have to blink occasionally because it gives a creative player the chance to think to watch for that "opportune moment" or to create such a moment by attacking the main eye, forcing it to blink. But, I digress...

I'm not going to bother going into specifics of how a pearl or similar might form in a beholder's tear duct, that's up to the individual GMs who decide to incorporate this idea into their games. I just wanted to put the idea out there. Beholders being magical, said pearl would probably have some arcane value as previously mentioned with Dimensional Urchin pearls. Beholders are much more magical than my Urchins, though, so their pearls might actually be magic items, or perhaps they secrete a gemstone rather than a pearl.

The main reason I like the idea myself is that, in time for April Fools' Day for a lot of you, it allows your players the opportunity to find beauty in the eye of the beholder at last;)
