Idea for Spell Mastery...

Hey all,

I, like so many, feel that the Spell Mastery feat just isn't worth taking really. So, I thought about it and just had an epiphany that I thought I would share for some feedback.

What if, instead of selecting a number of spells that can be memorized without a spellbook. The wizard who took Spell Mastery could select a number of spells (the same number) that they could then memorize without the normal 8 hours of rest?

Thoughts?

I think the problem with that would be that it would allow unlimited casting of a specified number of spells per day.

What if, instead, spell mastery allowed the wizard to spontaneously cast (like a cleric and healing spells) those spells that have been spell mastered? That way the casting would be limited by the number of slots the wizard had available.

I don't see what's so bad about this feat - you get a handful of spells that are innate, and it increases with your Int bonus. That's pretty freaking handy, IMO.

If you really want to "fix" Spell Mastery, why not say that you can take it multiple times - say, up to three. For a wizard with an 18 Int, that's 12 spells - that pretty well covers a good spread of commonly-cast spells for most mages.

The house rule our group uses, BTW, is that a wizard gains Spell Mastery (for free) for any spells that he develops himself. The reasoning behind this is that the wizard spent the time and research to create it, and he knows it so well that it's pretty well imprinted in his mind.
