Ideas for a barbarian/paladin

Captain NeMo

First Post
I'm making a 16th level Dwarf with 10 Totem barbarian (bear) and 6 Paladin of Freedom levels. The idea is that he will be a grappling, bullrushing, tank powerhouse but I've fallen astray. I've got 40 point buy and 4 extra feats for free...plus 260,000gp to spend. Any ideas?

You can be Chaotic then turn Lawful, or vica-versa. I'm not sure what a Paladin of Freedom is, but he might Chaotic anyway.

Don't barbarians have to be any non lawful?

Don't paladins have to be Lawful Good?

Paladin of Freedom is a variant Paladin from Unearthed Arcana which is Chaotic Good.

Interesting, I had never really thought about this before. I envision a strong-willed barbarian leader figure who deeply cares about people and looks outside just his tribe or clan. I'd think he would have larger plans for the world, lofty idealistic goals that he acts upon.

As far as mechanics go, I like divine vigor (complete warrior) personally. Combined with Barbarian movement, that'll have you speeding around the battlefield and the temporary hitpoints are always nice.

Also from complete warrior, Shock Trooper [tactical] is pretty cool and allows neat stuff with charging and bull rushing.

Some ideas for magic items:
Ring of Freedom of Movement
Glove of Storing
Vest of Resistance
Belt of Giant Strength
Cloak of Charisma
Holy, vicious melee weapon

Personally, I would get rid of the Paladin levels, and pick up Champion of Gwynharwyf from BoED. It's like a CG Paladin, but you get to keep building your DR, cast spells while raging, etc.

It's a great class, add Mithril Plate mail (and still get your movement b/c of the Dwarfness), and either a Dwarven War Axe and large shield or a greatsword and you have a bad dude.

As for character, what kind of role-playing do you like? This guy could be the scowling hatered of evil (think Punisher) or could be the charismatic leader champion of the down trodden (think Robin Hood).

Sounds like fun.

For Point but, wow 40 is a lot! I would go with …

STR 16 + 2(Level 4 and 8) = 18 [10 points]
DEX 10 [2 points]
CON 16 + 2(Dwarf) = 18 [10 points]
WIS 14 [6 points]
INT 10 [2 points]
CHA 16 +2(Level 12 and 16) –2(Dwarf) = 16 [10 points]

Feats=
Lv 1 = Righteous Wrath
Lv 3 = Knight of the stars
Lv 6 = Extra Rage
Lv 9 = Power attack
Lv 12 = Cleave
Lv 15 = Combat Expertise*
Extra 1 = Great Cleave
Extra 2 = Track**
Extra 3 = Extend Rage
Extra 4 = Improved Bull rush

*Most DM’s will allow you to use combat expertise while raging if you have the Righteous Wrath feat, if yours doesn’t, go with something else, maybe Endurance.

**If this is the kind of thing that comes up a lot, if not, skip it and add Weapon Focus. If you don’t take track, don’t bother taking a lot of Survival either.

Skills, lots of Intimidate, survival (if you took tack), and sprinkle ride, handle animal, and swim to taste.

As for gear, I’m not going to bother writing up all of it, because I don’t know what kind of campaign this is and what you’ll need. But you should get…
Mithril Full Plate +4 (26,650gp)
Great Sword +3 (18,350gp)
Ring of Protection +4 (32,000gp)
Amulet of Natural Armor +4 (32,000Gp)
Cloak of Charisma +6 (36,000gp)
Belt of Giant Strength +6 (36,000Gp)
Gloves of Dexterity +6 (36,000gp)
Animated Large Shield +4 (36,000gp)

That should put your AC at 39, it’s not a bad start. I’m sure others will tweak as needed and come up with more obscure items for you if you ask.

Again, this is just a general list. If your game focuses around demons, for example, you might want to pick up a bane weapon, or even a different PrC.

The more I think about it, the more I think you might want to take a single level of cleric. You loose a point of BAB, and a level of Barb for DR and Rage etc. But, you can pick up two useful domains. Make on of them Strength and you get Enlarge person as your domain spell. Make the other something with no level dependant features, like Wrath (BoED) or Competition (CDiv). Both those help in battle, and Competition helps with grapples too.

Also, you would be able to use clerical wands, which are usually the cheapest healing around.

Finally, it would let you take Divine Vigor for even more HP and movement (which IIRC stacks with rage).

Just a thought

Bearing in mind I've been making him without having the chance to look at this page, this is what I've come up with so far. I had considered a level of cleric, but I'm not too sure...I know that we've already got a ranger, druid and another mega-tank in the party (a half-ogre with close to 250hp IIRC). I think I'm going to end up being a utillity dude, backing up the half-ogre and providing secondary spells.

Bear in mind I have limited (read: no) acess to alot of non-SRD/core material, so telling me what the non-core feats do would be a huge help. :)

Ok, in the first post I got the impression you wanted a melee monster.
Was that wrong? If so what role would you like to play in the party?

Feats I used:

Knight of the stars: Lets you add +1 to any roll, once a day. Not great, but it's a prerequisite for the Prestige class.

Righteous Wrath: lets you think clearly while raging, show mercy, stop raging, retreat, all that. Also, the first time you hit an evil enemy they have to make a will save or be shaken.

Extra rage: Lets you rage two more times per day.

The Prestige Class is too long to put here, does your DM have a copy of the BoED?

If you're a grappling powerhouse, where's your Improved Grapple? :)
You might also consider feats that improve your AC against Attacks of Opportunity, though I can't remember wwhich ones those are... oh, and you must take Agile Riposte as well... nothing like getting a free swing for a missed attack, especially if that free swing is a Grapple attempt!

I know that as a Barbarian you tend to get less 'fun' Fighter feats than a Fighter would, but what do you do...
