Ideas for a city watch detective

That's pretty cool, Hyp! I'd never really thought about it that way; I might have to modify how I play my druid.

At this point, though, I'm leaning more toward ditching the animal companion entirely. What would y'all think: would getting a bonus feat instead of the companion be a fair trade? If it's underpowered, that's totally fine, but if it's overpowered to get a feat (specifically, Improved Trip, given that I already have the prereq), I'll see about something else.

Nature Bond is from Complete Adventurer.

PHBII has an optional ability for rangers to take instead of Animal Companion: Distracting Strike (basically, a foe you hit loses Dex-to-AC until his next action, IIRC).

Ooh, sweet! I think my brother has PHBII; I'll ask him to look into that. As a rogue/ranger, that would be fantastic.

Masters of the Wild has a PrC called the watch detective.. and I think it wouldn't take much to 3.5 -erize it.. if anything at all.

Had that been said already?

I looked at the watch detective, but decided it wasn't really right for this character. Too thinky, not enough muscle.

Complete Adventurer has the Vigilante PrClass. Might want to look into that.

But a straight Ranger/Rogue (with just a level or 3 of Rogue for the sneak attack) works just fine. In fact, that's the build of the Bounty Hunter NPC in the DMGII.
