IDW announces new "Dungeons & Dragons" comic series

I'm interested in any setting, any version any time, anywhere.

Honestly, the lists of turn ons and turn offs is...WOW.

IDW as a publisher though? Not so much. Distribution on these titles is limited and confined to comic stores -- which is a specialty store I tend not to go to that often.

I don't know why Wizards can't do a deal with Dark Horse. Be the cool kid and still get big box bookstore distro along with a significant number of news agents. To me that's a no brainer.

It's good enough for Lucas and BioWare - it ought to be good enough for WotC.

Li'l sad to see no Eberron, but it's an academic sadness alone, since I'm not a big comic-buying dood.

That said, it's a genius idea, and they'll probably hit the ground running. Only problem would be if they're badly written or badly drawn. If they're really good, I might even pick 'em up, since while I'm not much of a comic-book fan, I'm OK with graphic novels. ;)

There's a grand tradition of mediocrity with D&D-licenced stuff, though, so we'll see.

Have we seen any actual D&D comics in the 20 years since the DC titles folded?

Yes.

Wikipedia said:
During the 1980s and 1990s, DC Comics published several licensed D&D comics, including Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, and Spelljammer.[5] Also during the 80s, one-page "mini-comics" appeared as advertisements in both Marvel and DC publications, always ending with "To Be Continued..."

After the release of the 3rd Edition, KenzerCo, better known for the popular gaming comic Knights of the Dinner Table, secured the licensing rights to produce official D&D comics. Using the license, they produced a number of different mini-series. One notable mini-series for this comic line entitled Tempest's Gate was authored by Sean Smith. It featured memorable iconic characters of D&D such as Zed Kraken, a powerful and influential magus.[1]

In 2002, Iron Hammer Graphics published the single-issue comic Vecna: Hand of the Revenent. In 2005, the license passed to Devil's Due Productions. Starting in June of that year, Devil's Due began releasing official adaptations of D&D tie-in novels, starting with Salvatore's Dark Elf Trilogy.

I purchased most of the Kenzerco D&D titles as I was really gung ho about D&D 3rd Edition, but later regretted it as I was not impressed by the artwork or the writing on most of their work. The Devil's Due comics were mostly (but not entirely) novel & short story tie-ins, and despite fantastic artwork (from what I saw) I wasn't interested.

So, a new line of D&D comics with original stories? I'm excited!

i liked the vecna book and would have liked to seen some more of that. i was quite fond of the spelljammer books from dc.

God, I especially loved the two-issue arc with the red dragon causing a bunch of trouble on one planet. They spend a whole issue building up the dragon as some bad-ass villain, including screwing over one of the regular crew.

The captain of the spelljammer vessel finds out about it, then in the space of two panels, zaps and kills the red dragon with a Finger of Death spell and storms off grumbling.

"Idiot."

Indeed. I quite like the FR stuff from Devil's Due.
These books? About Drizz't?

That sounds fantastic. Do you know which issues those are?

I don't own 'em anymore, unfortunately, and I can't find reference to them online anywhere. Anyone else out there who has these?
