If ENWorld should ever do a Kickstarter it should be...

...for a full documentary of the next GenCon, day 1 to 4, with all the cool things that happen over there (Booths, Ennies, IronDM, panels, etc..)

Being from the other side of the pond I only get the chance to go to GenCon every few years/decades so the only source for me to get some feeling on what is going on there is badly made Youtube videos and forum reports (with the risk that your eyes start to bleed within seconds).

I seriously would throw money at a GenCon Coverage Kickstarter if it would be well done and if it would cover the different aspects that make GenCon so unique. I think I might not be the only one who would love to see such a documentary/coverage.

I would like to see one that goes toward software or a salaried employee that will eliminate the overabundance of kickstarter projects displayed on the homepage and elsewhere.

We have done a couple of Kickstarter projects. I did think a video Gen Con thing would be cool.

I disagree.

An EN World Kickstarter should fund the acquisition of the D&D brand.

If WotC offers to sell, then we can talk :p

A GenCon video could be very cool, but it ought to be done by somebody with filmmaking experience. I don't think that's currently in our "core competencies".

There are some cool teams on the market for this. Companies like 2 Player Productions (2PP), Vantage Points Productions or Suddenly Tragic Productions (the first two did the Penny Arcade TV series, the last one did an awesome documentary about subway musicians in NY).

Since they are all indie teams the pricing might be more or less reasonable and the quality they provide can be seen in the work they did before (i.e. 2PP also did a really cool documentary about chiptune music, Reformat the Planet)

The more I think about this, the more enamoured I'm becoming with the idea. I think it would be a blast. And in addition, we could manage footage of EN World events (such as the ENnies) in-house. Get lots of interviews, cover important panels. It'd be real fun to do and really give those who can't make it there an insight into what it's like to be at the con.

We have plenty of time to think about it!

Well, I am sure that places like Paizo, WotC and others would be more than inclined to give a helping hand when one of the biggest community sites wants to show the world what the whole fuss is about this roleplaying thingie going on at GenCon :)
