If I ran an RPG company I would make_________.

If I owned a game company I'd want to buy Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying and bring it back in style. It's been out around twenty years or so and I still enjoy both the flavor (magic created by Chaos gate in the north, greenskins (orcs) create own magic when they mass) and the rules (armor reduces damage, a huge number of different professions for PCs to check out).

I'd also want to get Talisman the board game. And include the space expansion set, that was cool.

I'd also want to create a Star*Drive/Star Frontiers style sci fi game. Earth and a few hundred surrounding systems. Real aliens as well as "animal" aliens (dralasite or was it drasalite is a real alien to me, the t'sa are an animal (lizard) alien). Alien artifacts. FTL travel (I like the dark matter idea). Religion still exists but has evolved. Minor psionics (mindwalkers were interesting). Theme would be either exploration or trade (I'm not into the military style sci fi). So either the existing worlds would be used (trade) or a book of unexplored systems and ideas would be needed (exploration). An easy to use space combat system that involves all PCs.

I think the Alternity book on the Aegis system (I think that was the name) and the Lighthouse were well detailed and a useful starting point for a sci fi campaign. I'd back off on mutations, cybernetics, and net running to concentrate on aliens, exploration, trade, and how humans/aliens act/live in space with FTL travel (i.e. lots of roleplaying to go with the gun battles and space combat).

First I would actually Play test, polish and publish my own game system. I play it on and off for like a year then play D&D and go back to it. I like it and so far so have my players.

As D&D Goes I want to produce my campaign I am currently running with its meta plot and write it in a conversational tone versus dryly putting forth information. I would write it explaining this is what happened in my game this is what could happen in your game. These are the motivations for the Bad guys and what resources they have and what their probably reactions are to the characters doing X.

It would be designed for 1-20th and include side adventures and advice on creating running sub plots. It would include say 10 encounters when you might expect 5 so that the gm can modify it to their group with out doing lots of work.

Its a small campaign world compared to say Greyhawk or FR but so far the players have not run out of places to go.

As far as the meta plot goes it would be presented to players the way I did. I am running a big plot do you want to play along. Ie they aren't railroaded becuase they choose to go along with the plot. They aren't forced to but once they become invested they usually don't want to levae the Plot.

I think it would be fun to write and play in.

I would produce a series of small spell/prayer books focused on different characters who have developed their own spells. Say like a 16-20 page book costing 8-12 dollars that would have the NPC, their background/story and some spells they created. MAybe with magic items they developed.

Could do the same with say a rogue but have thier organization and contacts and NPC's detailed. You could do the same with each class. I always like when Dragon magazine did similiar things just this expanded to include more info.

Also maybe do some town/villages the same way. A small, inexpensive series made to drop into most worlds. If I made a campaign world then I could also do Campaign specific ones.

Later

First off I'd make my own game system with ease and speed of use in mind. and no grids/maps/etc. I'd go way away from tactical to really cinematic, a real goof-off game that encourages players to do stupid/outrageous things.

Then I'd make an uber-epic campaign setting using the above game rules where the players would all play godlings vying for power in the world.

So basically the ultimate "beer & pretzels" and "power trip" mixture.

If I was a neo-publisher with a fortune to blow, I wouldn't need to write my own stuff, I'd hire from this thread!

1. I'd hire Gnarlo. Ham biscuits the size of hubcaps. Hookers. Yeah, dawg. You don't even have to write anything.

2. gregweller: Chthulu's Naked Lunch, the RPG. Dude, that is just Wrong. Things Man Was Not Meant To Do With A Typewriter. You're hired.

3. Diaglo, because of his old sig alone. "Complete Guide to Trying Out and Enjoying White Box Original D&D, C'mon, You Know You Want To". I'll give a double-your-money-back satisfaction guarantee on this one. Barsoomcore can be your assistant. ;)

Alright, I'm done being silly.

I WOULD publish Wombat's great Renaissance idea.

So what would you make?

Hey Hal! Remember me? It's DOM, from the long gone Netbook_of_Classes' age. So, to the question " what would you make?" I answer: publish my super cool d20 sci-fi rpg!" (see this thread for my gathering of opinions, to see if i am going the right direction - and I am, it seems).

Anyway, not finished until 2005 I fear. But I plan full of color illustration by myself, of better quality than what I did for NboClasses.

Hey, if nobody publishes it, it will be available for free on the internet! :p

Back in my halcyon days of freelancing, I had lofty ideas of writing all kinds of things. But, now I have a kid, and am pursuing my master's degree, so writing is not on the priority list for me, anymore.

But, some things that I would like to see/work on:

Bluffside Campaign setting book (The world Bluffside is set in)

More POIs for Bluffside - generic city-based locations

Expanded Artificer's Handbook - rules for alchemy, golem construction, magic traps, magic statues/pools, portals, you name it.

India Sourcebook.

Al-Qadim d20 (perhaps WoTC will do this)

RoboRally - reprinted, with new tilesets.

Chase d20. A book of mechanics for running exciting chases, with stats for lot of vehicles from chariots to Lamborghinis to Lear jets. I know Spycraft's got a system, but I don't want to buy Spycraft just to get the chase rules. And I'm not super fond of the Spycraft system.

Chases have never been done very well in any game system I've seen except for the James Bond game. And they seem like such a potential gold mine of fun!
