If I were a new publisher...

I was just wondering, with all the d20 publishers, homebrews, netbooks, and whatnot, their is too much rpg stuff. Not that its a bad thing.

I was just trying to think- what will the publishers start doing, or what should they do?

Pure history books, with illustrations, highligting the sort of stories and myths that roleplayers and DM's like, but also stuff that is interesting to an even more general market. Mechanics, if their were any, would be a web download.

Then again, maybe their is already enough history like that..

What do any of you think?

I think GURPS has pretty much got the market for history books for RPGs although some D20 conversions would probably sell well.

I agree though that unless publishers start being really innovative a few might start getting pruned

AEG put out Spycraft and so has triumphed Mongoose is hitting the Niche 'Support material' stuff.

What else is there that I can't find online or adapt myself (NB I always use Homebrew settings) ?

1. d20 conversions for actual historical battles and times

2. more multimedia, off paper onto celluloid and software

3. finite versions, easier for younger players, draws in a new crop

4. tie-ins and cross-marketing, sure, d+d ain't exactly gonna move a lot of 32 oz. mcdonalds cups, but there are niche markets where tie-ins are possible

5. judging from the top post, more and more alternative worlds, low-tech semms to be big..

6. keep cranking out a lot of the same old crap. if g.i. joe is worth 4-5 decades of action figures and books, a field as ripe as r.p.g. is gonna keep hatching minor variations as long as people keep snapping them up

How about kingdom, city or area modules with lots of history, current events, enemies & allies, good maps, and adventure hooks to name some ingridients. And perhaps originality? Too much of the current stuff is similar to each other.

This sounds like Freeport or Bluffside. Is that what you had in mind, or do you mean something else?
