D&D 4E If Not 4e, Then...

What'chagonnado?

Ironically, the arrival of 4e is the only reason I'm still playing 3.5 today. If the new edition doesn't pan out, I'll drop D&D and devote that headspace to other RPGs out there.

IMO, the market has *never* had better alternatives than it does today. I can't imagine being tied to a single game.

I already have a regular board-game group, and I've played video games for an embarrassing percentage of my life so I checked those off even though I'll do them 4th edition or not. I'd actually like to go back to an earlier edition. I never really liked 3rd edition, but everyone I knew only played it. I'm giving 4th edition a chance and will probably play it as I predict it will be necessary if I want to find groups, but I'll secretly pine for the older editions.

We've GOT to play together! My sentiments exactly.

Barring some version of D&D I'd want to play one of the new World of Darkness games. I love them all (especially Mage and Changeling) but finding a group to play it where I live seems an insurmountable task.

Yeah, same here.

I probably won't be doing much D&D in the brand sense, but no doubt some (more or less) D&D-style play using other systems. Arguably, even my heavily house ruled 3.5 doesn't resemble D&D anyhow, so whatever the case, D&D in the strict sense is going to be a thing of the past, for the foreseeable future.

I voted "play earlier ed." and "play another RPG". I'm definitely going to run a 4e campaign set in my long-running homebrew, as well as "finish" our long-running 3.5 campaign. But if 4e doesn't pan out my gaming group could always...

... start a Star Wars Saga campaign (so I can finally play my alcoholic Jedi, Jin Gimlet).

... play our old M&M campaign more often (so I can play my favorite PC, Joseirus, the Egyptian God of Mexican Wrestling).

... start a new M&M game (so I can play some of the new characters that pop into my head while commuting, like the Swedish Master of Friction, Bjorn Slippy or the hermaphroditic child-soldier from an alternate universe, Vivian Girl).

....converting my D&D homebrew CITY to Warhammer 2e (been meaning to do that for awhile).

... converting the same homebrew to M&M 2e (been meaning to this for a longer while).

Hmmm, I need more free time...

Since I reached the point where I couldn't stand 3rd edition any longer (for a lot of reasons that 4th has already shown it's repaired), and 1st and 2nd edition hold no appeal .... and the other RPG systems mostly have implied campaign settings built into them .... I would have given up on the role-playing hobby entirely, and chosen another one.

The coming of 4E changes nothing for my group: we will continue to play 3.5, board games and other RPGs. The fact that 4E will supplant 3.5 does not mean we'll have more free time, but it does mean we won't be spending as much money on books for D&D.

This poll is for everyone.

For the non-switchers: What will you do with your time instead of 4e?
- Continue to play an earlier edition (3.5).

As I have no interest in doing conversions (and thus won't buy any 4e products) and recently went crazy buying 3e adventures, I'll be:
- Golfing a bit more
- Skiing a bit more
- Actually getting caught up in all my video games (I'm playing Shining Force II right now, for cripe's sake!)
- Actually getting caught up in all my movies/DVDs (still back in Season 7 of Stargate...)

I'll keep playing 3.5E (lightly houseruled) for many years to come.

I'll be exploring the possibilities of organized play as a DM in 4th Edition for RPGA games and large conventions - both DDXP and GenCon every year, I hope. I hope to design some modules for LFR and finally get some published design credits to my name in 4E.

I love the D&D minis and will continue to collect them and play Skirmish 2.0 casually at home, as well as using the plastic minis for my regular games.

I'll volunteer some of my time as a campaign volunteer for a good political cause. Oh yeah, and I graduate from college this summer so I'll be looking for work. And I'll be outdoors a great deal this summer, enjoying my last months of freedom at pagan fests, sweating and dancing at bonfires all night. Good times!
