If you could Add one more race to the PHB

I have Hobgoblins as a player race in my campaign world. They've worked out surprisingly well as a strong military low-magic race.

While I love Tabaxi (cat-people), lizardfolk and the assorted animal types I wouldn't have them in the Player's Handbook. Becuase if you have one you have to have the rest and it would just be too many for a core book. Have them show up later in a Dragon article...

Three-quarterlings!

Actually, I'd say kobold or goblin. But I'm going to have a three-quarterling character one of these days...

I will admit that I am taking this from a friend (who posts here rarely), but why not just delete all the non-human races and then make new races that are tailored to the setting?

Interesting outcomes. Orcs and Gobs are tops as expected but the popularity of Lizards was suprising.
As expected half-races aren't popular (on the other hand half-dwarfs might be added) Its seems that the need for a good humanoid template that can be applied to various animals would be helpful and satisfy DMH's suggestion of tailoring races to the setting. Felon also had an interesting idea of adding a race with no stat mods but which was not human. I too make my gnomes Tiny so I agree with that and a large LA 0 races would be cool. Gnolls would be cool.
Ooze is um unusual (albeit that I did try to create a Willowisp rogue at one stage:) )

Anway results so far:

10 votes Orc
9 votes Goblins (not including hobgoblins which got 4) and a Large race (giants, half-ogre)
8 votes a Reptile race (including Lizardfolk and Saurials)
6 votes a Tiny race (maybe fey, or tiny gnomes)
4 votes Raptoran and Shapeshifters
3 votes Kobold, Planetouched (including genasi), Centaurs, Catfolk Constructs (Warforged?) half-dwarfs
2 votes Gnoll
Other - 10 votes
None - 5? votes

Not only would I not add another race to the array in the PHB, I would eliminate three of the extant seven: the gnome, the half-elf and the half-orc. This would reduce the race options to: Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, Man. The half-races would become Background feats, found as options allowable by the DM in the DMG, and gnomes would be restricted to specific campaign settings (and thus found in those products instead).

I can't see it. Flight invalidates too many elements of an adventure.

Depends.

Tiny flying people with base ability scores of -4 Str, +6 Dex, -2 Int, -2 Wis, -2 Cha.

They'd be excellent scouts and rogues, but otherwise... That way, they wouldn't imbalance anything. Sure, they can fly, but they can't carry others. They'd be unlikely to be any sort of spellcaster, or they'll be suboptimal at that, so no flying,-invisible-death-machine syndrom. They can fight back flying opponents, but wouldn't do much damage, unless they get the opportunity to do sneak damage, which would require them to be paired with others of their kind to flank a flying opponent.

after thinking some more... perhaps a frog race wouldn't be so bad to add.

typical names: Pierre, Claude, Jacque, Didier,

but this might upset too many sensibilities.
