If you could try a RPG that ISN'T D&D...

I'm kind of lucky-I'm the GM for most of the time, so we play the games I want to play. ;) If I had the "perfect" group (defined as "they show up and want to game"), I would like to play:

Feng Shui-We are playing that now
Call of Cthulhu (Delta Green)
Conan-We've played this a couple of times
Ars Magica
Star Wars d20
Angel-We've played this a few times
Midnight-We tried it once, but it left a bad taste in our mouths. I'd like to try
again
Skull & Bones
Savage Worlds (Tour of Darkness)
Weird Wars d20

Lots, I can't think of them all

Play Non d20

Call of Cthulhu
Delta Green
Chill
Star Wars WEG
Warhammer Fantasy (I can never afford the figures or have a place to properly put them)

DM

Star Wars d20
Delta Green d20
Testament
Coc (d20 and traditional)
any decent swashbucking system, d20 or otherwise.*

I love the horror genre, I just can't DM them properly. Star Wars, I never properly understood all the dice used in the WEG system.

There are more, I can't think of their names right now :( *

* I tried to do a Pirates of the Carribean style D&D adventure last year and I couldn't quite pull it off

** What is the name of that conspiracy style game similar to X-Files where you play a detective investigating paranormal events? It's been several years since I've heard about it, so it may be long out-of-print.

Eh. The B5-ness is 11 out of 10. The actual mechanics are more like a 7 out of 10. Not bad, just not great. With a few questionable choices, IMHO (like how bloody many hps high-level characters have in some classes). I'd take the source material and use The Babylon Project, Primetime Adventures, Now Playing, or CORPS, if i were going to run a B5 game.

I've heard that the Earth Alliance supplement is supposed to be pretty bad, though. How's the quality of the rest of the supplement?

Conspiracy X. I believe it is out of print.

Mythus (obviously :) )
Ars Magica
Man, Myth, and Magic (gonzo fun. The only RPG written by an occultist)
Runequest
GURPS
Pendragon
Talislanta
Empire of the Petal Throne
Kult
The Burning Wheel (which is now available in PDF via the Burning Wheel web site If you don't want to wait for BW 2e)
Aria: Canticle of the Monomyth (for those times when you just haveto play a society or culture)

BTW, Woodelf, when you remove the carets vB can turn www.tiltingatwindmills.net into a link.

Update: adgnepsef555 Looks like loads of fun. adgnepsef555, the first RPG where the bus driver causes SAN loss.

Dragon Warriors
I'm jealous--that's the one published as a a series of (6?) paperback books, early/mid 80's? I've been trying to get a copy of that for years.

Should I feel guilty about owning two copies of every book except 4 and 5, then? :)

If you want a copy, check eBay ... they pop up there every month or two. The first three generally aren't too expensive to get. Books 4-6 are more rare, and much more expensive.

Dungeoneer
Never heard of this one. And that's sort of unusual. What's it like?

It's the Fighting Fantasy system (from the gamebook series) with specific skills and various kinds of magic added on. The flavour of the game is very heavily in the 'light-hearted action' mode. There were three books in the series: Dungeoneer, Blacksand! and Allansia, plus they also re-released Out of the Pit and Titan as the monster book and setting book, respectively.

Again, eBay is a good place to find this one.

Some other games I thought of, that I forgot to mention the first time:

Lace & Steel - an Australian-designed game of renaissance era fantasy; rapiers and rapier wit abounded (diplomacy was handled by the same mechanics as duelling)

Maelstrom - the one released by Puffin in the early 80s. I'm a product of my era, and this was one of the first RPGs I played. It also has an unusual setting, inasmuch as it is a historical RPG (16th Century)

James Bond - played this a couple of times and had a ball. Would like to give it another run.

Everway and Theatrix - so many cool ideas, though I think they would be very tough on the GM

Das Schwarze Auge
The Japanese RPG based on Record of the Lodoss War
Dune: Chronicle of the Imperium (own it but have never played)
Dragonquest (see above)
Savage Worlds
AFMBE

Rome, UFOs, and Venus as Hell. And some of the best damn GMing advice I've ever run across. Herbie was a character, you must admit.

It's being revised even as we speak! Eden is coming out with a Unisystem version before the end of the year. It should kick butt!

Funny. I found two more things that were then mentioned on this list after I posted yesterday. Space 1889 (really for the setting more than anything) and Reves des Dragones. The latter I've read - the free download. The mechanics look a bit weathered, but the concepts are fabulous.

Aren't they? I love this game.
