If you could try a RPG that ISN'T D&D...

  • WW's "Storytelling" system -> the new one. They made some fundamental changes to Storyteller, and I'd love to see if it makes the game less "martial arts dice chucking" and more, well, "storytelling."
Probably not. While i haven't finished reading it, it sounds like the only real move in that direction is giving bonus XP during play when a flaw comes up, instead of extra points at chargen time. Otherwise, the mechanics are just as gamist-simulationist as ever, and the "storytelling" focus has to come from those few mechanics that deal with it (personality traits) and the playgroup.

Everytime I look at lists like this I find that what I call D&D isn't really D&D ;) Currently I am running AU, with heavy doses of Skull & Bones, Swashbuckling Adventures, Nyambe, and a lot of reading about Mayan culture...
I know what you mean. My next campaign will be D&D. I'll be using Arcana Unearthed, The Book of Drawbacks and Distinctions (any game as crunchy as D20 System needs to have a flaws system), Artificer's Handbook (the only part of the rules that i consider badly broken, and for which there is something that solves the problem ready as a plug-n-play solution--wish it were as easy to simplify combat), and probably the maps from the Al Qadim box. And that's it. Oh, probably some book of monsters, but i'm thinking of using the Goodman Games book of plant monsters as the only one, and making the whole campaign focusing on those as the main badguys, in much the same way that undead or humanoids tend to be the focus in most campaigns. I'd still consider Arcana Unearthed and Redhurst to be "D&D", as well as several other D20 System products that people have listed in this thread. I'm undecided on Nyambe.

Fading Suns is possibly my favourite SF setting of all time. I have no idea how the rules are in play (they look a little cumbersome, actually), but my god, I want to run this.
They're smooth as silk, really. Only change to make is the simplification to damage dice proposed in the players' guide (i forget right now what it is--it's been years since i've played it). Other than that, it's as easy or easier than any other one-mechanic system--fewer complications than Storyteller or most versions of D20 System.

Dragon Warriors
- because it's the first fantasy RPG I played regularly, and because there is something to be said for goblins armed with icicle swords, and boggarts who can dance on moonbeams. Very folkloric fantasy - like it a lot.
I'm jealous--that's the one published as a a series of (6?) paperback books, early/mid 80's? I've been trying to get a copy of that for years.

Dungeoneer
- a fabulous 'pick up' RPG. I think it would fall to pieces as a campaign, but much fun for one shots
Never heard of this one. And that's sort of unusual. What's it like?

A couple games I haven't seen mentioned here are:
  • Savage Worlds: I would like to try their new Necessary Evil game - I played it at GenCon in August
  • World War II Heros: I believe this is from Steel Magic Studios. Looks very compelte and realistic, using d20.

Spycraft (played this at a con and I love it! Just wish my gaming budget could be expanded to include this)
Currently available at overstock.com for ~$20.

Babylon 5 d20 (I just want to see how this one turned out)
Eh. The B5-ness is 11 out of 10. The actual mechanics are more like a 7 out of 10. Not bad, just not great. With a few questionable choices, IMHO (like how bloody many hps high-level characters have in some classes). I'd take the source material and use The Babylon Project, Primetime Adventures, Now Playing, or CORPS, if i were going to run a B5 game.

In a different thread, I mentioned that we usually have friends over every year to play all the non-D&D RPGs that we would otherwise never get to try. I'd love to have suggestions of more games, and see the ones that other people are interested in but don't get to play.

In no particular order:

Games I'd love to play, but haven't:

Mechwarrior 3rd Edition (I played a lot of 2e, but never the 3rd, which looks way awesome. Unfortunately I can never get anyone to GM a Battletech game, other than myself...)
All Flesh Must be Eaten
GURPS Space
Runequest
HARP
Deadlands (non-d20 or d20)
Pendragon
Blood Dawn (or any post-apocalyptic RPG)
Hercules & Xena RPG (just for the fun of it)
Conan (I've always wanted to play in the Hyborian Age)

Games I've played in the past (if only for one session) that I'd love to play again:

Star Wars (WEG version)
Earthdawn
Ars Magica
Skyrealms of Jorune (I GM'd a long 1 on 1 campaign of this, and would love to either GM or play it again. My all time favorite RPG setting).
Burning Wheel (totally awesome game, hopefully I'll be playing it soon)
Werewolf
Dunjon
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (love the world, fun system- even if it is a bit clunky)
Shadowrun (some of my best gaming in college was in a crazy Shadowrun campaign)

non-D&D Games I have played before and would like to play again:
Savage Worlds
All Flesh Must Be Eaten
Call of Cthulhu
The End
Kobolds Ate My Baby!
Synnibar (maybe just character creation--that's the best part)
Deadlands
Weird Wars

D&D Games/Settings I have not played yet but would like to:
Warcraft
Nyambe
Redhurst: Academy of Magic
Ravenloft

non-D&D Games I have not yet played, but would like to try
Grim Tales
Wraith: The Oblivion
Vampire: The Masquerade
Darwin's World
Testament
Hackmaster
Rippers: The Horror Wars

For reference, my current list:

  • A superhero game of some sort: Mutants & Masterminds, Marvel, Champions, Godlike, or what have you.
  • Adventure!, Savage Worlds, or Adventure! d20. It's been a few years since I played a pulp adventure game. We could do with more albino gorillas.

  • Forgive the shameless plug, but you could probably kill two birds with one stone: check out Four Colors al Fresco: Pulp-style superheroes in an alternate Renaissance (see website below).

  • Exalted. I've heard nothing but good things about this White Wolf game where you play Gods, or creatures pretty close in power to them.

Go for it, I love the game and wish I was playing it right now. From what I've gathered of your GMing style over the years I'd love to see how you'd handle it.

What does your list look like?

Exalted
Star Wars
Mutants & Masterminds
Vampire the Requiem

Exalted: I've plunked down for most of the in-print books, and dammit, I wanna play a Lunar butt-kicker.

Same here, though I'm a little more interested in a stealthy type who focused on shape-shifting. An elk or moose totem butt-kicker would be cool as well though, but that's probably just so I can walk around with antlers all the time.
