If you could try a RPG that ISN'T D&D...

My group has played Mutants & Masterminds as an occasional event. As a longtime fan of Paranoia :uhoh: I am eager to try Paranoia XP. Call of Cthulu is also a favorite if you don't mind ending up dead or insane by the end of the adventure.

Exalted: I've plunked down for most of the in-print books, and dammit, I wanna play a Lunar butt-kicker.

Shadowrun: God, I miss playing this. That was the first long-term RPG I played, freshman year of college.

That's pretty much it. Our next non-D&D game is a BESM-d20 Aberrant hybrid game. The DM's making our characters for us, and cheesing them out the wazoo; it's rather scary, as I know the NPCs will be even cheesier.

The games I play regularly right now are Arcana Unearthed, Dawnforge and something else I can't really go into now. My list would be really long, but I can't think of that many right now. However, the top of my list would include:

7th Sea - If you like Feng Shui and you like the swashbuckling and pirate genre, then you will LOVE this roll and keep game.
Fireborn - I can't wait to play this game.
Feng Shui
Legend of the Five Rings (Roll and Keep)
Castle Falkenstein
Talislanta
Babylon 5
Wheel of Time
Exalted
Iron Kingdoms
Hamunaptra - It's not even out yet, but I can't wait to play in a mystical egyptian setting.
Mindshadows
Spirosblaak - another one that's not out yet that I can't wait for.
Farscape - Just because I love the setting so much. I wish this were Spycraft compatible like Stargate SG-1 is.
Deadlands
Spellslinger
Shadowforce Archer (for Spycraft)
Mutants and Masterminds (Preferably in Brereton's gothic pulp setting)
Star Wars (though I would love to mix and match a whole new Sci-Fi setting using Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, and maybe a little Stargate - It would take a lot more work and interest to do than I have time right now though.)

I've got enough ideas for HERO games to be playing well into my nursing home days. Never had a chance to run it yet.

The other main ones I want to do are Kobolds Ate My Baby and Ninja Burger.

Oh, loads of 'em... Just going by the nearly unplayed books on my shelf... BESM, Legend of the Five Rings, Spycraft, Godlike, Babylon 5, Star Wars, Wheel of Time, World of Darkness, Warhammer Fantasy RPG, Feng Shui, Ars Magica, GURPS, Cyberpunk 2020, Praedor...

Alas, the combination of time and willing players seems to be rather difficult to come by.

Oh, aniother one that I've heard about - I don't know much of the mechanics, but the setting shodl be a hoot - Space 1889

The mechanics are pretty ordinary for the time it was published, pretty dated now. But the setting is indeed fantastic - I dunno why somebody like GURPS hasn't licensed it.

I'd love to try my hand at or get back to playing:

  • Shadowrun
  • Paranoia XP: I got a copy of Paranoia, 2nd ed. from a friend and I love it. I'd like to give the newest incarnation a spin.
  • Hackmaster:
  • Call of Cthulhu
  • Babylon 5
  • Deadlands
  • Gamma World (1st or 2nd edition only, please)
  • Decipher's Star Trek RPG (CODA System)
  • Star Wars d20
  • Ars Magica: The 4th edition has been sitting on my shelf for a while. I'd love to give it a go, but can't seem to get my group interested...
  • Spycraft: I ran successful one-shot a while ago, but haven't had a chance to run it since.
  • d20 Modern: I'd love to get a Dark*Matter game going or update my old Star*Drive game using d20 Future
  • All Flesh Must be Eaten
  • Army of Darkness
  • Sidewinder: Recoiled

The system I really want to try out at the moment is GURPS 4E.

But there also a few settings I want to try (probably with GURPS):

- Fading Suns: Possibly the coolest science fantasy setting ever. What's more you can steal plot ideas from any source - SF, fantasy, even history - and it all works together with the background. Seamlessly. Now how cool is that?

- Castle Falkenstein: Steampunk with magic, evil, nasty faeries, and dwarves with a strong preference for German beer. I'd love to give this a try...

- Transhuman Space: I loved the concept of the setting when the first chats about it were posted. I helped with the playtests. I've even written for one of the supplements. So I will damn well play or GM it one day, too! Its strange mixture of hard science and human perversity appeals to both the scientist and fiction fan in me...
