Maybe in a special Ultimate Total Holistic Star Wars Complete Collector Edition that will contains enough DVDs to allow you to see the movies as seen on theater, as modified in 1997, and as yet-once-again modified. Plus a bonus scene by MTV, and one where the Star Wars Kid is CG-ed into a bunch of practicing padawans.

I agree with LightPhoenix. Lucas lost all touch with reality a while back, IMO. When E2 was on the way, there was an interview with him the paper. He went on about how actually "everyone" liked E1 and it was the media that made up the idea that some fans thought it was weak/stupid/offensive/etc. It was spooky to read what the man was saying. It was like he had lost the ability to hear anything he didn't want to.

I doubt the petition will do much good. I signed it because I agree with the letter in that the originals should be preserved. They were a huge part of what made me interested in sci fi & fantasy and thus got me reading more at a relatively young age. Also, I'm sure that -if they aren't released by Lucas on DVD- the pirate copies will only flourish that much more.

I signed, but at this point I don't think Lucas is going to listen to anyone. I'm entirely convinced at this point he doesn't give a whit about the fans, and I'm beginning to suspect he never did.

Agreed. That's why I don't feel like it is worth putting forth the effort for such a thing.

George Lucas is a weenie. I used to have respect for him, but not anymore.

The original trilogy is one of the centerpieces of my childhood. I grew up a Star Wars fan, and it shaped my life. I fell in love with science fiction because of the SW films, and its one of the reasons I eventually worked for an SF publisher. I remained a fan when everyone else had forgotten the films during the late 80s & early 90s. I was one of the guys going to fleamarkets looking for SW toys while others laughed and threw their toys away.

Then the Special Editions came out, and I was thrilled to see the films again on the screen. I dragged my little sister and my Mom to go see SW:SE on opening night, and I walked away disappointed. This wasn't the same film I grew up with. When Lucas said that he would never show the original films again, I lost my respect for one of my childhood heroes. To turn his back on the fans that put him where he is today is a slap in the face. The special editions may be what he considers the final film, but that doesn't discount what so many others grew up with and love.

Sorry for the rant.

Last I heard (some tv interview thing with Lucas, IIRC), he is gonna release the originals on DVD sometime after Episode 3 has had its run in the theaters.

Shyeah. If he didn't he'd be the stupidest man on the planet, nobody's that stupid.

I felt the same way, but I wrote off the disappointment based on two factors:
1) You can never go back "home", as it were.
2) I'm not 8 anymore.

What I mean is that it's a rare occurence (at least in my life) that repeated experiences live up to the initial experience in terms of enjoyment. This is especially true with entertainment, whether it is books or movies. Sure there are exceptions, but they are not the rule.

As for #2, if I were 8 when Ep 1 or the re-edits came out, they may well have had the same impact on me as Ep 4 did in 1977. But since then, my tastes and expectations have changed as I've morphed into an OLD FART (TM). At any rate, while some of the changes to the original trilogy really bugged me (ahem, Greedo), they didn't ruin the movies for me either. I just have different expectations than I did when I was 8. The re-edits were a nice way to see the originals in the theatre once again, and nothing more.
