Dang, can you say "aging fanbase"? Right here, we've got all the explanation we need as to why so many folks around here start getting all indignant when WotC seems to be courting younger players . . . and, for that matter, why WotC clearly freaking needs to court younger players.

Of course, this is just EN World. I get the impression all the kiddies are over on the official WotC boards (yeah, I'm blaming them for making that community basically uninhabitable to sentient life), so our numbers are probably very skewed.

Remember, there are even MORE people that don't even post on the web at all.

You can learn nothing at all about D&D players from these kinds of polls, save for the select few that post at a specific board and happen to respond to a single thread.

I'm 46. I'm technically the oldest member of my gaming group, although a couple of the other players have birthdates within a few weeks or months of mine.

But I don't think ENworld is actually indicative of an aging player base. First of all, being in the 30s isn't that old when a larger percentage of the population is living into their 80s these days. ENworld probably isn't that exemplary of the general D&D-playing populace. There are plenty of players who don't frequent internet forums. The ENworld audience is probably more indicative of the age group of players who are concerned with all of the things associated with the game, such as rules and the quality of play.

What a huge poll! :) Very interesting too - I think it is a good sampling of our community of posting members here at ENWorld. The question is simple and I see some new members happily obliged to participate! :D

I turned 45 less than a week ago - thinking I'm too old for this hobby now :( - but then I see after 520 votes the average is in the mid 30's! And I am at the moment one of 7 who is forty-five years young!

-W, happy again. Oh, post 300! :)
