Illithid History

I ask what is known about the history of the illithid.

Their origins are obscure, but in The Illithiad we learn that they once had a worlds-spanning empire. They also created the gith races. We know that they created the Staff of Penumbra and the Annulus. What else is known about them?

Well the Githyanki, Githzerai, and pirates of Gith are all descendants of an illithid slave race that developed psi powers and revolted.

There was an old dragon article I think titled the sunset world that went in depth on illithids and I think it was the basis for the Illithiad. The article is somewhere in the Dragon Archives CD.

Monster Mythology had a pair of illithid deities.

Oh and rumors persist that a half fiend illithid who was a cleric of Azathoth ascended, I believe I've even seen his campaign posters for the presidential elections "Don't settle for the lesser evil." :D

Try to find the spelljammer set "The Astromundi Cluster", I have been told it has a LOT of information on the Illithids. (I don't have a copy of it myself.)

If you have the Dragon Magazine CD also try to search for an old Dragon story about the "Sunset World" (I can't remember if that is the exact title, but a word-search for "Sunset World" should find it. The story was about a group of humans who hired some githzerai guides to explore an illithid planet.

Astromundi Illithids

The illithid of the Astromundi Cluster actually sprang from a human-like race. Due to some psionic and magical experimentation, the race as a whole began a long descent into mutation and madness. The illithid were the result of this strange evolution. It's been a long time since I wrote it, though, so I can't provide too many particulars - if you can find the boxed set, though, there are quite a few bits about the mind flayers contained within.

"The Sunset World" is in Dragon #150. I think it was written by Stephen Inniss, but I'm too lazy to go check for sure. Also in that issue, if I remember correctly, is a "Dragon's Bestiary" with some creatures from the illithid homeworld.

The creatures in the Dragon that had illithid information were great. Find that article. The article on the illithid was also very good.

The illithids had a great love for starship building and other technological studies. This mainly led to their enslavement by the Empire, which their whole planet was forced to make starships and support Palpatine and his boot licker Darth Vader. Well anyway they final... OOOPS that wasn't illithids I was thinking of the Mon Calamari race. MY Bad.
