While some illustrations would be nice, it might limit players from having their characters make certain spells their own. I have generally assumed that each spellcaster casts a spell in his own way, even if all the mechanical stuff we need to adjudicate the game are the same (for the most part). That is, each spellcaster's "fireball" can have a different appearance according to what the player describes (this one is bright green, this one manifests a flamethrower being held by the caster, etc.), as long as it doesn't alter the actual mechanics of the spell (as Piratecat said).

Having players describe is probably fine except that I've found that most players have an inherent 'lack' of description in their actions. I constantly find myself asking my players to simply tell what weapon they attacked with or to describe their spell action.

I've always thought that some/all the spells should include descriptions of verbal/somatic components and non-rules spell effects (different visuals, sounds, smells, etc.) from a sampling of different casters. Could be a fun use of the iconics: Hennet's magic missile looks like this, Mialee's like this, the evil necromancer's like this...

The "Gnomish Root Tosser" is a spellcaster who's spells all look like tubers and other vegetables of the earth. A magic missle looks like a carrot streaking through the air, for example.

It's my non-PrC PrC.

I love the idea of a carrot and turnip tossing mage! Reminds me of that old juice-guy from the info-mercials. Great idea for some druid type as well.
