I'm a murderer

Let me relate to you what has happened. My character, Bachus aVilgo, is a rogue who specializes in knowledge and magical items. He has a theory that magic is vanishing from Greyhawk. This is a slow process but eventually all magic will be gone. As his own personal quest he tries to seek out one shot magic items and to use them before it's too late. He says he likes the rush.

Previously Bachus was confronted by an old adventuring companion, an NPC, from before the time I played the character. Apparently we, the rest of that old group, left him for dead. Now Red was back and demanded to get a share of the loot, some one thousand gold pieces. He also wanted his wand of flying back. The problem was that I had used up the wand. The back story was all DM fiat, but perfectly alright for it was fitting for my character. Still, this created quite a problem for my greedy rogue. The cash I could easily raise, however the wand would be worth considerably more than me. I'd be destitute if I had to pony up to replace it.

The old companion was a fighter so I knew that he could be his own enforcer should I refuse to pay. Red came across quite like Mel Gibson in Payback. I simply wouldn't stand a chance in an honest fight so a plan started to form in my greedy little head.

I told Red that I needed a day to get the loot from where I had hidden it. Red agreed and during the rest of the day I made arrangements. I rode out of town (Pelgaryn) and buried a chest on a vast plain. I left a note in the chest and then went back home.

The very next day I went to Red's inn and invited him to go with me treasure hunting. I carried a spade. We took our horses and rode for a couple of hours back to the place of the chest. Finally, we arrived.

I worked on uncovering the chest for half an hour and then told Red that he could finish the job, for I was tired. He did and I sat up. Once the chest was uncovered Red slowly opened the lid. I produced my trusty old crossbow and sneak attacked his horse. It collapsed in a heap of meat.

Red turned towards me and exclaimed:

"What did you do that for?"

"Read the note", I said pointing my crossbow in his direction. Red picked up the note and read it.

THERE IS NO HONOR AMONGST THIEVES

Then I shot him and rode off a bit. Surprised by me shooting him Red didn't do much except groaning in pain. Also he was wearing armor and couldn't reach me with his melee weapons. In a round or two I was able to turn poor old Red into a pin-cushion.

"Check mate", I said and promptly dumped Red's body into the chest and covered it up with dirt but not before I had a chance to loot him. I rode back to town but first I let loose my horse and then swam into town through the harbor thanks to a couple of magical trinkets I own.

As I got home my friends were out and I spent the night drinking, crying, and flogging myself. I was in pretty bad shape when the rest of the guys got home and healed off my self inflicted punishment. Those clerics have no understanding for good old atonement by the whip. The rest of the gang have no idea that I'm now a murderer of the first degree.

So, what can I expect now? Will I get caught and punished by the authorities (Hextor and Heironeous rules Pelgaryn in an unholy alliance) or will the DM pair be even more devious than me?

At first someone must miss Red. If Red is not missed by someone who wants an investigation and nobody has seen you murdering Red then nobody can accuse you of murder (except by extraction of the information by spells out of your brain). If you buried Red properly he will not be found easily and will not raise as ghost. :)

It really up to the DM and you.
Do you go on as nothing happened?
Do you confess?
Do you wait to see what happens, then find an out?

Did you check to make sure he was dead this time, he was left for dead before?
Did you strip the body? Loot yes but...
Did you remove your bolts?
Did you really notice if there was anyone about?
Did anyone see you and Red leave the inn together?
Did someone over hear you and Red talking?
Will Red be missed?
What happen to your horse, how to you explain it missing...with gear? What else did you leave behind...you sure?

I've never done anything like this before. My characters are always good one way or another but Bachus is True Neutral. It really left a bad taste in my mouth after the session was over. Kind of strange, really.

The DMs (two) said they had never anticipated such a move from me so I guess anything is possible now. I don't know if they will grab it for all it's worth and shake adventure out of it or if they simply will feel that murderers are always caught and hung.

It's by no means a perfect crime. I left clues all over the place. To answer each point on HoEs list:

Do you go on as nothing happened? YES
Do you confess? NO
Do you wait to see what happens, then find an out? YES

Did you check to make sure he was dead this time, he was left for dead before? NO (I said that I continue to shoot him until dead.)
Did you strip the body? Loot yes but... NO
Did you remove your bolts? NO
Did you really notice if there was anyone about? NO, but I chose the location with that in mind
Did anyone see you and Red leave the inn together? YES, the innkeeper
Did someone over hear you and Red talking? NO
Will Red be missed? NO, don't think so. He left town as he left with me.
What happen to your horse, how to you explain it missing...with gear? What else did you leave behind...you sure? The horse won't be missed. However his horse is still ...

GAAH! I can't believe I forgot about his horse.

Has your GM modified your alignment to Evil yet?

The DMs told me that it was up to me as the player.

That's okay. We're all murderers in the end. Me, I slew some 3,000,000,000 diminutive insects today with my Crush and Powerful Charge abilities.

This remind me of the time when my group went with the bad guys (titans) and laid a huge trap for our centaur "allies"... Ah, good times. Evil = best, I always say. It's often a) more fun b) more interesting c) naughtier. Go Frosty.

The name "Bachus" rings a bell. Doesn't it have something to do with the greek god Dionysus?

That is what I call, in the trade, "re-negotiating a deal".

Repercussions - depends....

Was Red "in tight" with others who truly care if he suddenly drops from sight? These are the people who will come looking and asking questions. You will need a good alibi story and a method of defeating any "getting to the truth" magics.

Your immediate concern is if Red has posted a "bloodbond" contract with the local assassins guild. A bloodbond contract, IMC, is a contract posted with the assassins. Usually, the person taking out a 'bloodbond' names people to be assassinated in the event of the contractor's likely death. It is used frequently by merchants and powerful people who are dealing with dangerous people or rivals as a way to protect from treachery and doublecrosses. The contractor makes regular or special contact with a guild front man as proof he is still alive. However, once the contractor fails to make a meeting and the guild cannot contact him, that is sufficent proof for the guild to fulfill the terms of the contract and whack all persons listed in the 'bloodbond' in a 'settling of accounts'. Needless to say, the contract is paid in advanced and the contractor can revoke it at any time and get a percentage of the contract money refunded.

If there is a 'bloodbond' contract by Red, the assassins are looking for you even now....

It is best overall to quit the city and head for other parts, returning only after a very long period of time has elapsed.

That said, IMC, I've had, as a plot twist, a 'bloodbond' contract fulfilled after 20 years since it was posted with the assassins guild. The target of the contract returned to the city after 20 years and unfortuately, let himself get known he was back in town. And the assassins fulfilled the 'bloodbond after 20 years of looking for their target.
