I'm back. And this time, D&D 3.5 will not kill me.

Linus,

Welcome back. From what you said in your post, we have pretty much tread the same ground. I really like all incarnations of D&D but find myself going back to the older editions of the game. It's all good; just start playing and remember that above all else, it is a game and supposed to be fun (in otherwords, don't sweat the small stuff) ;) .

Hey, don't forget the kick-ass banking sector. :D

Yeah, I remember the one time that guy was whispering to the teller, and when asked to speak up, he spoke and said, barely above a whisper: "I want to deposit 40 million dollars." And the teller replied: "Oh, you don't have to whisper about that. It's no shame to be poor!"

Linus, it's amazing how similar our RPG "careers" are. I too came back for 3.0 and totally burned out on it.

The way I made it work was by switching to Savage Worlds.

All the fun of classic RPGs, none of the studying. Seriously, man. Check it out. ;)

Yes. Savage Worlds is great. I'm on to WFRP now, but SW is bound to return for me.
