D&D 4E I'm confused - 4E and Essentials

There will be, once Heroes of Sword and Spell comes out, it seems.
But I want it now!

But seriously, I think it's funny that one of the most helpful and knowledgeable posters on this board is from Brazil. He's thousands of miles away but he watches WotC like a hawk. Thanks for your wealth of good information, Klaus.

 I do what I can. And really, this bit of info was upthread.

The Thief's Tricks look fantastic to me. I know the Rogue in our group will want them.

Is there any way for him to get them other than converting to a Thief?

I say it may, or may not be. I guess some or all of the Thief's class features will be re-packaged and become one of the class feature options you can choose from.

But regarding how will it be categorized, and what part of the current build should be sacrificed to gain them, I have no clue at this moment.

By the way, if your player who is currently playing a rogue really want to use those Thief tricks, as a DM you can always say "Ok, you can re-construct your PC as a HotFL Thief." Your player don't need the release of class compendium to play HotFL thief. And he can even combine it with utility powers, feats and such from pre-Essentials books.

Similar method has been continually encouraged each time new "Powers" books introduced new builds.

As a recap, you can share powers between Essentials and pre-essentials provided they match class, level, and type of power. A Slayer or Knight can not trade their first level powers with a classic figher because the slayer/knight has Level One Utility at will powers, while the classic fighter has level one attack at wills.

It would be ok to trade out the level two powers because in both cases the powers are Fighter Utility 2. Same Class, same level, same type of power.

Level three, back to a no go. The classic fighter gets a Fighter Attack 3 Encounter power, while the slayer and the knight have a class feature, not a power at all, and so forth.

Class Compendium: Heroes of Sword and Spell

"This book gathers five classes from the Player’s Handbook—the cleric, the fighter, the rogue, the warlord, and the wizard—and presents them in the new D&D Essentials class format introduced in Heroes of the Fallen Lands, with rules updates and errata. It features rules that allow D&D Essentials characters to select non-D&D Essentials powers, and it grants non-D&D Essentials characters access to class features from Heroes of the Fallen Lands and Heroes of the Forgotten Kingdoms. In addition, this book presents feats, rituals, and rules for multiclassing."

I really can't wait for this book. While a lot will be reprints of the stuff we already have, the idea that it gives us a way to mix and match elements of the old and new is pretty cool (not to mention that it will address the "how do you multiclass if you start with an essential characte" type questions). This will be the big thing to either confirm or dismiss the "4.5" arguments, since this will make the essential books even more compatible with older stuff.
