A new edition does not automatically bring with it extra sales if it isn't backwards compatable. The new edition must be superior enough to the old edition to make people want to abandon their new books.

Granted, the new edition must offer more value.

That said, when WoTC released 3.0 its initial focus was core books - replacing all those 1e and 2e books on the market. Replacement was a key strategic component of the new edition.

Now, I would argue that unless 4e has the same key stragetic component, namely replacement, then there is no place for it in the market. It should not simply be a new revision. If there is a strong backward compatability then it is in practice merely a revision.
