D&D 4E I'm Not Sure I Can Afford 4e

No, the real question is, "How much game does $200 buy me?"

Also, I've never had problems running 3.5. Apparently, I do it all wrong, because encounter setup has always been easy, NPCs are simple to design, combat is fun, and I like mind flayers just as they are.

When you factor in the DDI subscription, it probably won't even get you all of the "core" classes and races from 3.5. That is a very good reason to steer clear of 4.0. Ooops. I said somethng bad about 4E! How long do you think it will be before I get dogpiled by rabid 4E fans, and the thread gets shut down by the mods?

This sounds very reminiscent of an MMO player who has put so many hours into his game that he dreads the thought of quitting. ;)

One thing I don't get is this either/or mentality. If you love 3.5, you can keep playing it, even if you play 4e, too. There's this huge "fanism" mentality of D&D players that seems to force them into not only the ability to play D&D but only the ability to play one edition of D&D. It's crazy. I hereby order everyone who has never played anything but a version of D&D to go out and play one other RPG if only for one night. Step to it, people!

Really the 10th? It's close to the billionaires like Bill Gates (2nd)! If it's true that's incredible!

I might simply buy the yearly PHB, MM and DMG, but forego The Complete Halfling Cobbler Handbook and what not.

...I learned my lesson from 2nd Ed.

Yep, it's a shame that you will have to buy several rounds of PHBs and MMs plus a DDI subscription just to get what most people consider "core". It's one of my main sticking points with 4E. The naked greed of this marketing strategy really rubs me raw.

RPG player gets memo that games are a business as well as a hobby, doesn't like it. Film at 10.

Let's say you really like to play half-orc barbarians. In 3.5, you can do that with just the PHB, which you can get for under 20 dollars online. In 4.0 you need to buy PHB I, which is more expensive than the 3.5 PHB, plus maybe PHB II and have a subscription to the DDI. So playing the same character is considerably more expensive in 4.0 than 3.5. I believe that that's the point that pawsplay is trying to make.
