I look at it this way.   I've bought almost every book for every edition since the Red Box, so I'm an old-timer but not an original D&D player.  The books can be expensive if you buy them all, but I've found most of the books I've bought were more for ideas then the necessity of play.  I think you'd be able to get away with the big 3 and a couple of additions and have the game you want.  Plus even if the editions change again, at least the books are fun to read again years from now.  Heck, I'm enjoying re-reading my 1st edition stuff lately with 4th edition coming out.  I think you can get a lot more game with D&D for less money then most hobbies.
				
			 
				 I can see it now.  The poor halfling cobbler, living above his dilapidated shop wondering why he made that choice, why that career path.  He could have grown pipe-weed you know, like his old man.  No, he had to try his hand at cobbling.  It wouldn't be so bad really if only the rest of the town would stop whispering, laughing and pointing at him.  It really is quite an amusing image, to me at least.
