D&D 4E I'm Not Sure I Can Afford 4e

I look at it this way. I've bought almost every book for every edition since the Red Box, so I'm an old-timer but not an original D&D player. The books can be expensive if you buy them all, but I've found most of the books I've bought were more for ideas then the necessity of play. I think you'd be able to get away with the big 3 and a couple of additions and have the game you want. Plus even if the editions change again, at least the books are fun to read again years from now. Heck, I'm enjoying re-reading my 1st edition stuff lately with 4th edition coming out. I think you can get a lot more game with D&D for less money then most hobbies.

Why would I start now, considering after 20 years of DMing I have never used anything Tolkien specific (Orcs, Halflings etc).

Sorry, it seems my attempt at grand humor failed there. Mea culpa. I just thought the idea of halfling cobblers versus the tradition of barefoot halflings was funny showing I'm perhaps too involved in this hobby. ;) I can see it now. The poor halfling cobbler, living above his dilapidated shop wondering why he made that choice, why that career path. He could have grown pipe-weed you know, like his old man. No, he had to try his hand at cobbling. It wouldn't be so bad really if only the rest of the town would stop whispering, laughing and pointing at him. It really is quite an amusing image, to me at least.

That's cool; and also quite funny – sorry I didn't pick up on it.

For the record, I'll take Gnome-anything over Halfling-action.

Ooops. I said somethng bad about 4E! How long do you think it will be before I get dogpiled by rabid 4E fans, and the thread gets shut down by the mods?
You've started another thread to express your opinion, so please keep this one to the subject at hand.

Thanks. Email me with any questions.

For some people $200 a year may be a lot of money for a hobby. Myself, I have a wife and three kids. It takes us $50.00 just to go to MacDonalds. A day at the movies runs more than $100. I get a lot more enjoyment out D&D than $200 would buy.
W... T... F?

I have a wife and four kids, and I can eat at MacDonald's for about $25, and I can see a movie for $30 or so... including popcorn and drinks. What the heck are you doing wrong?

I'm thinking that the price is a big deal in my decision not to adopt. I haven't fully "amortized" the cost of all my 3.5 books, and it'll be a long time before the content "catches up" to the point where I have nearly as many options available. The opportunity cost for starting on a new system as opposed to filling up the corners of my current system is too high.

No thanks.

For me, it wasn't like I was going to stop buying gaming books. In fact, I've more or less stopped buying 3.5 books (I just don't need anything new, though Five Fingers is probably going to end up on my bookshelf soon), so I've been lax in my gaming spending.

I will probably buy less this time around, going for more quality over quantity. I expect to be able to use my 3.5 books (adventures particularly) with some conversion work.

Things must be really inexpensive wherever you live. Tickets alone cost $40.00, plus popcorn, plus drinks, plus whatever else comes up.

You have it easy, try living in London (UK) – it costs £50 (£100) to walk down the street…
