I'm thinking of going back to 2e!

Ok...I have been thinking about this for some time now - I'm about ready to abandon 3e and go back to 2e. Ok...I've said the blasphemy, now let me explain my reasoning. I really like 3e, I think the rules are much better and more player friendly than 2e. However, 2e contained some of the best rpg supplements and campaign settings. Sure there was a lot of crap produced for 2e, but there was also quite a lot of good stuff too. The current WotC design philosophy for 3.5e seems to be focused on adding new prestige classes, spells, and feats. While there is nothing wrong with this per se, there is almost no focus on settings, stories, or unique characters.

I started thinking about 2e the other day after reading the old Ravenloft supplement Carnival. The book contained a lot of unique characters and adventure hooks. This was the first time in a long time that I was inspired to run something. Two of my favorite settings, Dark Sun and Ravenloft, were products of the 2e days, with rules written specifically for the 2e system. I found White Wolf's 3e conversion of Ravenloft unsatisfactory because it focused too much on the "core" domains and left out the twisted ideas that made the setting unique IMHO (eg - the Nightmare Lands and the Carnival). I have found no decent 3e conversion of Dark Sun; the athas.org conversion over-adheres to the 3e philosophy of "balance" which sacrifices the flavor of the setting, while the Dragon Magazine conversion tries to shoehorn every 3.5e concept into the setting.

I don't necessarily want to go back to the concept of Thac0 or racial level limits, yet 3e is so different that it's hard to convert all my old 2e supplements. How compatible would something like Castle & Crusades be with 2e? Well, barring a half-way compatible rules-light system, my next game might be 2e!

How hard do you think it would be to convert Darksun and the other cool stuff to 3E? I really liked the conversion protocols that were published when 3E came out and I was certainly able to do some pretty fast 1E to 3E conversions using them.

I don't think 2E is evil or horrendous or anything but I would sure prefer to convert stuff to 3E than pick up 2E rules again. But, to each his own.

Then you're getting the wrong books :D

But second edition had some great stuff in it and I use it occasionally for my 3ed games.

C&C, namely the SIEGE engine of C&C, is highly compatible with 2E. Not only that it will allow you to easily adapt the rules you like from 3E to your 2E game.

In fact I prefer to use monsters, magic items, etc... from 2E for my C&C game.

Plus skills and a variant feat system from 3E.

So go for it!

If anything confuses you come visit us in the C&C forum. Its very friendly too. To the point that they don't hold my liking 3E against me! ;)

I'd recommend going with Castles and Crusades. It is VERY easy to convert 2E material to C&C, in fact there is a 'sticky' post on the Goodman Games forum at the top of the 'Dungeon Crawl Classics' section on how to do it (very few steps-you'll be surprised). I absolutely love it, and I can use everything I've acquired for D&D in the last 30 years with it.

Both the Basic Fantasy RPG and Castles & Crusades really require only Armor Class Conversion (20 - AD&D 2e AC) for minor NPCs and creatures, though C&C requires a bit more work for classed character conversion (there are more similarities between BFRPG classes and AD&D classes than there are between C&C Classes and AD&D Classes). That said, conversion is simple for either system.

Just FYI, Troll Lord has just released the third printing of the C&C Players Handbook, and will likely have their new boxed C&C Basic Set at Gen Con (boxes...they way RPGs are supposed to be packaged!)

I've run a lot of 1e and 2e adventures converted to 3e; it's not that hard. The main thing is just to keep an eye on the new power level and adjust things accordingly.

Cheers!

I saw the post title, and thought exactly the same thing. C&C does a good job of integration more modern game design in with the feel of older school games, and it is really easy to convert any generation of D&D to it.
