Image type and resizing quality

Greatwyrm

Been here a while...
Can anybody give me some advice on what image types resize with the best quality. What I want to do is copy smaller sections out of a larger map and zoom in on them for adding detail as regional maps.

Thanks!

Are you going from web images? What format is the map in originally?

For web images, a .jpg will resize fine, though if it's at a low resolution (probably at 72dpi), you won't be able to blow it up too much. Of course, that will be the problem with most web images. They're at screen resolution, so taking a smaller portion and increasing the size for more detail just won't work well.

.gif files don't resize well at all, up or down. They are in indexed color, and that tends to get bitmapped with you resize.

If you have an original file at a higher resolution, like a photoshop file, you're in business.

Anyway, give me a little more info. If you want to post the original image, I can play with it and see what your best options might be.

Well, the original file format will be black ink on copier paper. I'm open to pretty much anything after that.

Basically, I want to scan the map in. Then zoom in on portions of that to add progressively more detail for close up, regional maps.

Ah, if you're scanning in, then you're in business. What graphics program are you using? You should scan the map in at 150-300dpi. The file will be large, but the quality will be enough that you can cut sections and blow them up.

Typically, depending on your program, the native file type will be fine (like a basic photoshop format--.psd file). If you want to post them to the web, then when you're done you can convert to jpg or gif, but for doing the work you need, it will depend on the program. A .tiff file will always work well, but they tend to be large files.

I suggest doing most of the work in Photoshop. Most any older version is fine. Scan the map into that program at 300dpi, 100% size. From there, it will be easy to cut sections of the map and zoom in. Just use the basic photoshop file format.

Anyway, that's what I suggest. I think Photoshop can do most all of what you'll need.
