Imitating someone's voice...

I am trying to find out of there are any rules that cover imitative someone else's voice. I would think this would be covered under Disguise, but it is not. There are rules under Disguise that talk about disguising yourself like a specific person, and those who are familiar with that person get a bonus to see through the Disguise. The problem is, this is a Spot check vs. Disguise. Sure, you might have a great disguise, but if you sound nothing like the person, that is a dead giveaway.

So how would you handle imitating someone's voice? It's not covered under Disguise or Bluff. Is there an "official" rule for this?

I think I'd handle it with disguise, but replace all instances of 'spot' with 'listen'.

It's obviously part of disguise (the skill for pretending you are someone else), just not called out specifically.

I'd say that imitating someones voice is much easier than making yourself look like them, and I'd figure that in to the equation.

I'd make a disguise check opposed by sense motive (in fact that is what I use for seeing through normal disguises too, rather than continue to overload spot, the miracle skill).

Cheers

It is a very class sensitive example, but you could look at the Sculpt Sound spell in the PHB. [Bard 3, I believe] That would let you do it with a simple WILL save standing between you and success.

Just as a data point, Kenku from Monster Manual III have Mimicry as an extraordinary ability, which lets them mimic any voice they've heard. Using their voice-mimicry in the presence of someone who knows the original voice is resolved as a Bluff check opposed by Sense Motive.

Personally, though, I'd tend to go with it being part of the Disguise skill.

I think I'd be inclined to use Perform (Oratory). This is the skill I envision as being able to adopt many different voices as needed for a story - or perhaps, imitate someone's voice precisely.

Opposed by: Listen, I guess. To listen carfeully and hear the wrong thing being said or something.

Disguise gets you the physical appearance, with Perfrom (Oratory) giving you the rest.

Bluff opposed by Sense Motive works okay, too, I suppose. Maybe it's an either/or thing?

I'd do it as some Perform skill, or maybe even bluff. Definitely not disguise.

It's really not very easy to imitate someone's voice, though. Especially since, in order for the imitation to really do any good, the person you're trying to fool would have to know the imitated person well enough to recognize their voice.
